Freeform’s Cruel Summer is a teen drama that’ll keep you guessing. The show follows Kate, a popular high schooler who is abducted, and Jeanette, the shy teen who decides to take Kate’s place, socially, in her absence. Set in the ‘9’s and in three separate timelines over a three year period, the drama depicts the trials both girls face before, during and after Kate’s disappearance. It premiered in April, and has already been renewed for season 2. Like many other teen shows, viewers may be wondering: how old are the actors who play the kids on the show?
It turns out the stars of Cruel Summer are fairly close in age to their teen fictional characters. As far as we know, there are no secret 30-somethings here. Below is a look at the cast of Cruel Summer and their real life ages.
Olivia Holt as Kate Wallis
Olivia Holt stars as Kate Wallis, the high schooler who goes missing, then eventually returns, in Cruel Summer. In real life, Holt is 23 years old and a veteran Disney Channel actress. She also played the titular role of Tandy Bowen/Dagger in Marvel’s Cloak and Dagger.
Chiara Aurelia as Jeanette Turner
The scheming Jeanette Turner is played by Chiara Aurelia, an 18-year-old actress who’s had roles in Marvel’s Agent Carter, Pretty Little Liars, and Gerald’s Game. Cruel Summer is her first leading role. Her transition from the shy, meek Jeanette to the self-assured version of the character throughout the series shows she has the range to make a multi-faceted character come to life.
Froy Gutierrez as Jaime Henson
Gutierrez plays the love interest of both Kate and Jeanette, Jaime Henson. In the wake of Kate’s reappearance, Jaime questions his relationship with Jeanette when she starts to be connected to Kate’s abduction. The 23-year-old Gutierrez has played characters in well-known shows including Teen Wolf, One Day at a Time, and The Goldbergs.
Harley Quinn Smith as Mallory Higgins
With a name like Harley Quinn Smith, you’re destined for big things. Smith plays Jeanette’s former best friend Mallory, before Jeanette became popular. The 21-year-old has been in Supergirl and Once Upon a Time…In Hollywood. Already she’s set to appear in another big project, the upcoming Masters of the Universe: Revelation (which is being run by her father, the famous filmmaker Kevin Smith). Smith will voice the character Ileena.
Allius Barnes as Vince Fuller
Barnes plays another of Jeanette’s former friends, and love interest to Jaime Henson’s friend Ben Hallowell. The 22-year-old has been on shows including Snowfall, Unbelievable and PEN15.
Nathaniel Ashton as Ben Hallowell
Ashton plays Ben Hallowell, Jaime Henson’s friend and love interest to Vincent. Ben is skeptical when Kate returns, and questions both Jaime and Vincent if they think Jeanette is hiding something about Kate’s disappearance. Ashton’s age is unknown as of now. He’s a relative newcomer to acting, with Cruel Summer being his most well-known role so far.
Barrett Carnahan as Derek Turner
Jeanette’s older brother is played by Barrett Carnahan. The 28-year-old actor has had a number of roles before Cruel Summer, and recently appeared as a young John Kreese in Netflix’s Cobra Kai. His next role is in the upcoming TV adaptation of the young adult mystery One of Us Is Lying.
