How to have a delicious hot meal on flights – without having to pay for it | The Sun

PLANE food can be really expensive – and bland – with more airlines forcing passengers to pay for meals.

However, there are ways in which you can save money on in-flight food, while still making sure you get yourself a hot meal.

Tiktoker Melie (@melies.vie) showed how she always avoids having to fork out for lunch, while never going hungry.

In a video she showed how she always packs a tub of instant noodles in her hand luggage, which can then be heated up with a simple request made to the cabin crew.

She said: "I'm sharing my ultimate travel hack for longer flights.

"Why spend $5 (£4) on cup noodles when you can bring your own for free?

"Step five cover the lid and wait patiently while other people look at you and your cup of ramen with jealousy.

"Enjoy your delicious cup ramen for free."

The footage showed Melie making her noodles on the plane after getting some hot water from the flight attendants while they were conducting their trolley service.

She then eats them at her seat, while also making a small origami bowl out of the foil lid.

Melie's hack divided opinion among those who had seen the video, with some really impressed with the idea.

One wrote: "My husband absolutely hates airplane food, we always make sure to bring his shin ramen with us, it’s his life saver for every flight."

Another wrote: "Totally doing this next time, nothing like a nice warm cup of noodles."

A third added: "I actually travel with some to hotels too. Life savers."

However, others found plenty of reasons why they wouldn't be comfortable trying it out themselves.

One said: "What about the smell?"

Another commented: "All flight attendants on Tiktok strongly advise against drinking the water on airplanes. So maybe stick to crackers or something?"

Others were similarly worried about the water, with some cabin crew members claiming that the hot water containers on planes are never cleaned.

However, Sun Online Travel's resident flight attendant insists it's fine to drink.

They said: "It's true they're not cleaned out that often but I don't think it's a problem.

"The water is boiled. I always drink tea and coffee with the water on board, and so does everyone I work with. I've never known anyone to get sick because of it."

The same flight attendant also recommended people bringing their own noodles onto the plane if they're a picky eater, or aren't sure there'll be something to suit their tastes on board.

They added: "I love when people bring instant noodles on board, it makes my life so much easier.

"If you aren't sure you'll like anything on board, it's such a great option. I'm always happy to fill up someone's cup for them if they bring them onto the flight."
