YouTuber Cole Baker regularly takes on 30-day fitness challenges to gage their effectiveness in building strength and muscle, from the time he spent a month training like Arnold Schwarzenegger, to following the lesser-known “prison workout” pioneered by the beloved character Uncle Iroh in Avatar: The Last Airbender. In his most recent video, Baker takes on one of the most popular fitness challenges: the One Punch Man workout.
For anyone who might still be unfamiliar with this fitness regime, it is the daily routine adhered to by the hero Saitama in the anime One Punch Man. Here’s what it consists of:
“It’s a lot more running than I’m used to,” says Baker at the start of the month. And the running portion of the challenge proves to be the biggest sticking point as time goes on, with increasing soreness in his legs and feet. However, after the first couple of days, Baker finds that his time on each run is gradually improving. “You know what, it’s getting easier and easier, so that’s a good thing,” he says.
The pain persists throughout the entire 30 days, but Cole continues to go through with his 300 bodyweight reps and 10km run each day.
“I can’t believe we made it this far with the shin splints and feet problems I’ve been having from running so freaking much,” he says. “”In the last week or so, my time did not get any better, but I am pretty blaming that on shin splints. They are absolutely killing me, and they just got worse and worse.”
Shin splints are a painful side effect of overtraining in runners, and can often occur as a result of trying to do too much too fast. While there are stretching techniques which can help, one of the best things you can do to recover from shin splints is ease up on your training and rest—not keep running 10 km every day.
At the end of the month, Baker has lost 2 pounds, and admits that there has not been much of a visible, physical transformation from the workout—but that he can feel a marked improvement in his personal fitness.
“Losing weight doesn’t come from exercise as much as it does from your diet, and I didn’t change any of that up,” he says. “I am definitely going to be taking a break from running to hopefully heal my shin splints. That was one of the hardest 30 days of workouts I’ve ever had. However, I feel so much more in shape now.”
