Few beauty trends have had as successful a comeback as the french manicure. After a brief hiatus, the nail trend from the early aughts has once more solidified itself as a top design for celebrities and small-town beauty enthusiasts alike. Since their resurgence, french tips have undergone a metamorphosis, spurring countless spinoff designs, from the invisible french to the shadow french, with seemingly no end in sight. The french line manicure is yet another example of that.

Coined by celebrity manicurist Tom Bachik — whose A-lister clientele includes Selena Gomez, Jennifer Lopez, Hailee Steinfeld, and Margot Robbie, to name just a few — the french line manicure came about when he created a new set for singer Tori Kelly in September. Kelly’s nails featured almond-shaped gel tips with a sheer base color and a purple smile line along the edge of each finger. But the nail art didn’t stop there: straight across the bottom half of each nail was a horizontal line in the same shade of purple.

The small but mighty addition of the horizontal line puts a unique twist to the classic french manicure while still feeling minimalist, aligning with the recent spike in pared-back nails. If you’re a DIY-nail aficionado, this design is easier to re-create at home than most, and a professional at the salon should be able to do it in no time.

Given the past success of modern french manicure styles (we’re looking at you, glazed-doughnut french), you’re going to want to jump on this one before it’s everywhere. See the french line manicure trend up close ahead.
