While surgical face lifts and tummy tucks are still largely reserved for those more advanced in years, the demand for injectables is higher than ever among among those in their twenties and thirties.
Rather than looking to turn back the clock, swathes of millennials are seeking out ‘tweakments’, in part due to the increased visibility that comes with widespread social media use.
Daily Star Online dabbled with dermal fillers at the hands of Dr Sarah Tonks – founder of The Lovely Clinic, located in West London – earlier this year.
Six months later we have returned to review a slew of new, lesser-known treatments.
After a consultation with aesthetics whizz Dr Kishan, we opted for some vitamin injections all over the face, with particular focus under the eyes and in the lips.
We also decided to try out some preventative Botox to keep the first signs of ageing at bay.
The goal? A fresher face with diminished fine lines and dark circles.
After some 3D imaging to track the transformation, we received numbing injections in the gums, as lips are famously sensitive when it comes to augmentation.
While they kicked in, Dr Kishan sterilised my face and got to work preparing his various needles and solutions.
First up was the Botox, or in my case ‘baby Botox,’ which essentially means a lower dosage in more injections sites, perfect for those in their late twenties or thirties with less pronounced signs of ageing.
The injections were virtually painless and over quickly, taking no more than five minutes to administer.
We targeted the forehead and crow’s feet cosmetically, while a heaver dose was administered to the masseter muscles in the jaw to help combat our excessive teeth grinding.
That’s right folks – Botox can be used therapeutically to alleviate damage to you teeth while you sleep, as well as diminishing tensions headaches.
We noticed that we slept easier after the injections and didn’t wake up with an aching jaw, as was the case previously.
What’s more the baby Botox in our forehead provided a wonderfully subtle, refreshed look, without too much impairment of movement – perfect for those after a discrete result who want to avoid the dreaded frozen face.
Next up were our under-eye injections, constituting of a dose of vitamin c alongside a host of antioxidants to offset dark circles, which are particularly prevalent in those with fair skin who are prone to blue undertones.
This was the only treatment which involved a degree is discomfort, as the solution does burn a bit going in.
Fortunately the sensation passed just as quickly as it came on and we were stunned by how immediate the difference was in our colouring. Even by the time we had arrived home the treatment had started to take hold, leaving us decidedly more awake looking.
With the tone evened out, next we looked to tackle the remaining hollows using a filler tailored for use under the eye.
Unlike the stiffer fillers used for sculpting, this one is more malleable and doesn’t attract excessive water, meaning it won’t swell under the eye.
This bit was painless and over in a flash, but instantly made a difference in offsetting the socketed look we previously sported.
Then came the jawline enhancement – using a very firm filler at the corners of the jaw, just beneath the earlobes.
This helps create that ‘cut’, sharp angle and once the filler is settled it essentially feels like part of your jawbone.
The treatment is particuarly fantastic for men looking for that Superman-esque aesthetic and looks brilliant in profile – we couldn’t get enough of the definition it provided. What’s more, the injections were painless and over in minutes.
The skin boosters followed – hailed as injectable moisturiser, this treatment is scattered across the face to improve hydration, plumpness and luminosity across the entire complexion.
Unlike some other hyaluronic acid-based fillers, which are used for reshaping, these won’t define your features, but rather provide a glow from within.
We noticed an improvement in skin texture within a week, such as fewer bumps and dry patches.
While multiple sessions are recommended for best results, we certainly felt an improvement after just one, so reserve your skepticism until you’ve given it a whirl.
A similarly hydration-oriented solution was also used in our lips, resulting in a natural plumping effect without radically changing the shape or volume of our pout – the perfect step if you’re keen to avoid the infamous ‘trout pout’.
Lips are extremely sensitive, so if you’re bad with pain, it’s probably worth opting for some numbing injections around your gum line to stop you flinching through the injections.
We’re not ashamed to admit that’s the route we took and we had zero regrets.
Be warned though, the lips tend to swell, so how you look immediately after the procedure doesn’t represent what you’ll end up with. Luckily after a couple of days our swelling settled down and we were left with the subtle result we’d hoped for.
In terms of aftercare, we were encouraged to avoid the gym for 24 hours, as well as saunas and steam rooms for two weeks.
We were also advised to avoid booze immediately after treatment as this can increase the risk of bruising.
For all of our injection sites we only walked away with a couple off teeny bruises, both of which were easily masked with a bit of concealer.
All in all, we couldn’t rave highly enough about our treatments and were thrilled with the natural-looking, discrete results.
As desired, we were left looking like ourselves on our best day, rather than someone else altogether.
