The MTV VMAs are tonight and if all you can think about is, “Will Ariana Grande own the entire ceremony like she did last year?,” then you’ve come to the right place. And unfortunately, the answer is no, she won’t, because she’s not even gonna be there.
Even though Ari secured 12 nominations this year for her two albums, Sweetener and Thank U, Next, she won’t be at the awards show because she’s across the pond in England. On Sunday, she headlined Manchester Pride, which came two years after the Manchester Bombing. During her performance, she told the crowd, “Manchester holds a very special place in my heart. I’m so happy to be with you, so thank you for having me. Sorry, I’m so nervous. I had so much more to say but I’m really very overwhelmed. So thank you.”
And while it normally wouldn’t be out of the question for her to fly to the awards show in New Jersey, that’s just not feasible this year because she has a concert in Paris, France on the 27th. (Also, I don’t even want to imagine all the hate she would get for flying back and forth between continents in the midst of this huge flying private vs. commercial debate.)
Last year, Ariana and Pete Davidson made their red carpet debut as a couple and she pulled off the most intricate performance of “God Is a Woman.” Since then, though, Ariana and Pete have broken up and she’s released so much more music. It has been a year.
Tonight, Ari is tied for nominations with Taylor Swift and up for the Video of the Year, Artist of the Year, Song of the Year, Best Pop, Best Hip Hop, Best Direction, Best Visual Effects, Best Editing, Best Art Direction, Best Cinematography, Best Power Anthem, and Song of Summer awards.
