Ben Affleck has publicly thanked his ex-wife Jennifer Garner in an emotional open letter after admitting his divorce was a mistake.
The Oscar-winning actor has been opening up about the struggles he's faced in the past few years this week, and touched upon history of alcohol abuse and his divorce during Friday's appearance on Good Morning America.
Ben and Jennifer announced they were separating back in June 2015, but it took until October 2018 before their divorce was finalised.
After the interview with Affleck, Good Morning America's Diane Sawyer read out a note that Ben had written for Jennifer, which went as follows:
"What I want to say publicly and privately is, 'Thank you. Thank you for being thoughtful, considerate, responsible, and a great mom and person,'" she read aloud.
This came after the Batman V. Superman actor had detailed what it was like struggling with his drinking and his divorce.
Speaking about his break-up with Jennifer Garner, Affleck said: "I never thought that I was gonna get divorced. I didn't want to get divorced. I didn't want to be a divorced person. I really didn't want to be a split family with my children. And it upset me because it meant I wasn't who I thought I was. And that was so painful and so disappointing in myself."
He continued: "Divorce is very painful, and alcoholism is very painful. They just are. If there's something that your child is suffering, that's a level of pain that is not easily gotten past, not easily forgiven, not easily forgotten. And it's hard."
The Batman actor then started to talk about the effect his drinking was having on his children and the pain he was causing them.
"You're not going to avoid causing your kids pain, all pain. Pain is part of life. I take some comfort in that," he told Diane Sawyer.
"I'm doing my very, very best… It has to be good enough. I don't really have a choice," Ben added.
"I have to be the man I want to be at this point. I don't have any more room for failure of that kind."
This interview follows an interview he did with The New York Times in which he revealed his divorce from Jennifer was "the biggest regret of my life".
Ben has been in and out of rehab over the years, and he went back again in August 2018, just before his divorce was finalised.
Two months later and he broke his silence about his situation in an emotional statement on Instagam.
He wrote at the time: "This week I completed a forty-day stay at a treatment center for alcohol addiction and remain in outpatient care.
"Battling any addiction is a lifelong and difficult struggle. Because of that, one is never really in or out of treatment. It is a full-time commitment. I am fighting for myself and my family."
Ben did end up relapsing back in October 2019 after he appeared 'publicly inebriated'.
The actor is back on the big screen in The Way Back, which opens in the US on March 6.
