Bill Turnbull, 64, revealed in March 2018 he had been diagnosed with incurable prostate cancer the previous November. The former BBC Breakfast presenter spoke candidly about his health as he revealed he has thought about “funeral plans”.

The Classic FM DJ explained that he is currently fit and well and is determined to treasure every moment as he opened up about death.

The dad-of-three said he knows the Grim Reaper is “waiting” but has learned to develop a “healthy relationship with death”.

“I’ve thought a great deal about death since I was diagnosed with cancer because he’s there, y’know – the fella with the hood over his head and the scythe,” Bill explained to The Mirror.

“He’s waiting, and that’s fine. I’ve developed quite a healthy relationship with death.”

Bill says it is important that people should put their affairs in order, to make things easier for their bereaved families.

He told the same publication: “I feel very, very calm about it because I’ve given it a lot of thought.

“There’s no way I’m going to imagine I can live forever, nor would I really want to.

“You’re talking to someone who has an incurable disease so sooner or later it is going to come and get me. Later rather than sooner, hopefully.”

Bill is a patron of the Anne Robson Trust – a charity which assists hospital patients in their final moments.

The Classic FM DJ revealed he has given “serious consideration” to burial plans.

He commented: “I’m giving serious consideration to what sort of music I would want played at my funeral, whether I want to be buried or cremated, the funeral plan – all that sort of thing.”

The small-screen star previously admitted he felt like he was “inflicting pain” on his wife because of his health problems.

Bill explained that he now tries to find moments of joy every day so that he can enjoy the rest of his life in the best way possible.

Speaking to Mail Online, the TV anchor revealed telling his family he had an incurable disease was “very hard”.

He told the publication: “You’re inflicting pain on them. Personally I can deal with it but seeing them upset was horrible.

“Most of the time I’m fine, but every once in a while you have a dip.”

Bill has blamed the hormonal treatment for making him emotional at times and he has had moments where he “howls like a child”.

“You have a really bad day and howl like a… I was going to say like a child, but it’s even worse than that.”

He goes on: “If Sesi (his pet name for his wife) is there with me, it’s fine because I can lean on her. She helps me. I hate being on my own now.

“It gives you too much time to think and you can talk yourself into a dark place.”
