‘An honour doesn’t cover it!’: Bake Off’s Candice Brown shares a glimpse of the cake she made for Colonel Tom Moore to celebrate his 100th birthday

  • Here’s how to help people impacted by Covid-19

She rose to fame in 2016 when winning the seventh series of The Great British Bake Off.

But Candice Brown, 35, has described her ‘proudest moment’ as making a cake for Colonel Tom Moore to celebrate his 100th birthday last week.

The wartime hero has raised a staggering £32,796,365 (and counting) for the NHS after walking 100 lengths of his garden during the coronavirus lockdown.

Amazing: Great British Bake Off champion Candice Brown has revealed her ‘proudest moment’ after making a cake for Colonel Tom Moore to celebrate his 100th birthday

Candice shared two photos to her Instagram on Friday that show the delicious looking cake she made for Tom and his family.

To accompany the photos, she penned: ‘Wanted to share this and today seems a good time to do so. A couple weeks ago I needed to make a lovely cake, and that lovely cake went to the one and only Captain Tom Moore.

‘It’s not the most beautiful or extravagant but this was one of the proudest moments of my life being able to give this hero an early birthday cake along with dinner for his simply delightful family (we are just down the road from them) an honour doesn’t cover it.

‘I, we salute you sir, what a wonder you truly are. Thank you Colonel, for what you did then and for what you have done today ❤️ #captaintommoore #veday #veday75 #Thankyou #hero’

Colonel Tom celebrated his birthday alongside daughter Hannah, 49, her husband Colin and their two children Benjie, 16, and Georgia, 11.

His oldest daughter Lucy was unable to travel from her home in Reading to join the celebration but did make a virtual appearance via video-call.

The 100-year-old was promoted from Captain to Honorary Colonel last week after he raised over £32 million.

He now holds the Guinness World Record for the most money raised by an individual on a sponsored walk in the UK.

Colonel Tom also marked his birthday by achieving a second world record for the oldest person to have a Number One single in the UK chart following the success of his duet with Michael Ball.

The record was previously held by Tom Jones, who reached No.1 with [Barry] Islands In The Stream aged 68 in 2006, 32 years younger than Tom is now, aged 100.

Colonel Tom and Michael’s hit version of Liverpool Football Club anthem You’ll Never Walk Alone was also the fastest-selling single of 2020

Speaking from his home at the time, the war hero said: ‘What wonderful news to receive today, a No.1 single and a record breaker too – my grandchildren can’t believe I am a chart-topper!

‘I have to thank Michael Ball, the NHS Voices of Care Choir and everyone behind the scenes, who shared their talents and expertise in order to raise money for the NHS, to whom we owe so much.

‘And, of course, the public for buying the single and donating – we’re in this together, and I am forever grateful for your support. And this just proves ‘You’ll Never Walk Alone’.

A star-studded cover version of the Foo Fighters track Times Like These, which features Dua Lipa and Chris Martin, has since knocked Colonel Tom off the top spot.
