Once she’s landed a role, Constance Wu takes preparation very seriously. The actress just revealed that while doing research for her part in 2019’s Hustlers, she went “undercover” as an exotic dancer, working in a strip club to help get to grips with her character. And she walked away from the experience $600 richer.
“I did work at a strip club to get ready for Hustlers,” Wu told Kelly Clarkson this week. “I went undercover. I gave lap dances to strangers. I am not lying! I made 600 bucks my first night. I did.”
“I put fake tattoos on my neck, and I changed my hair, like I put these hairpieces in,” she said. “Yeah, maybe I found my real self there in the strip club… I mean, the stripping helped me to know that feeling. Because you know, you can’t duplicate it. The first time you walk into a club, and say, ‘hey, I would like to have a job here’. And then you go work that night.”
Wu also pointed out that the athleticism required in pole dancing is no joke: “It is really hard. I installed a stripper pole in my living room for a few months,” she said, adding a caveat that she learned during her undercover work: “When you’re naked they don’t care if you’re that good.”
In addition to her real world experience, Wu said that the other thing which helped her the most while making Hustlers was her female c0-stars. “I think a big part of ‘pulling it off’ is having a great team around you,” she continued, “and I think working with Jennifer [Lopez] and the girls. I mean, we really loved each other… So I think that’s what really made the movie for me.”
