TLC had a good surprise and a bad surprise wrapped up in one package for 90 Day Fiance fans.
Darcey & Stacey is of course returning for a second season.
The good news is that the network just released a surprise trailer.
The bad news is that, inexplicably, Darcey Silva’s widely reviled ex, Jesse Meester, makes an appearance.
Darcey Silva is an iconic fixture of the 90 Day Fiance franchise.
Who else has been part of the show for this long without getting married?
She spent four seasons on Before The 90 Days, divided between two different men.
Now she’s with a new man on her own show, with her sister as her castmate.
That doesn’t mean that everything is going to be perfect for her or for Stacey.
Their respective love lives are clearly full of ups and downs, no matter how hunky their boyfriends may be.
Darcey finally became engaged to Georgi, as viewers saw at the end of Season 1.
There was a lot of genuine interest in Season 2, with a fair volume of hype to see a trailer.
But a lot of fans are annoyed, some even outraged, by what they saw.
After Georgi is shown having a disagreement with Darcey, we are shown a new scene.
Here, Georgi contacts someone for a video chat.
“Hi Jesse,” he says to the screen as the blood runs cold in viewers’ veins.
Darcey is polarizing among fans.
Many people have strong opinions about her and about her sister.
Generally speaking, most fans either hate her or love her — with very little in between.
That polarizing nature is what helped her to stay on the show the whole time.
From a reality TV perspective, someone who is loved absolutely is “boring,” and someone who is only hated can turn off viewers.
Darcey is a mix of both — like other fixtures of the franchise, from Larissa Lima to Big Ed Brown.
Jesse is not that polarizing, because fans tend to agree about him almost universally.
He’s not a fan favorite. In fact, he is whatever you’d call the opposite of a fan favorite.
The general vibe all across social media and all demographics of fans is that nobody likes this dude.
Seeing Jesse seems to have thrust a dagger through the heart of a lot of the enthusiasm for Darcey & Stacey‘s new season.
“Man, Jesse’s 15 minutes was up 5 years ago, stop punishing us with this knobhead,” wrote one furious fan.
Another exclaimed in disbelief: “Really? Jesse? Is he that desperate for money to bash Darcey?”
“No thanks,” another unhappy fan wrote succinctly.
Another commenter jested that they were “not surprised” over Darcey’s misery.
The fan suggested that Darcey “leave the young kids” like Georgi behind and seek out a man her own age.
“Yuck,” one commenter responded to Jesse’s face.
“Why?” another wrote.
Another fan remarked that this would clearly be a “trainwreck.”
That “trainwreck” prediction might be right, but is that a bad thing?
After all, none of us tune into reality television to watch people make thoughtful, wise decisions about their lives.
It’s entertainment, and Darcey and Stacey and even Jesse (for a brief cameo) are certain to provide plenty of it.
