President Donald Trump‘s tax returns are not immune from legal proceedings, the Supreme Court just ruled.
Specifically, the highest court in the United States just ruled in a 7-2 decision that Trump cannot keep his tax returns and financial records away from New York City prosecutors. In the past, Trump and his advisors have refused to comply with subpoenas from the Manhattan district attorney.
“Two hundred years ago, a great jurist of our Court established that no citizen, not even the President, is categorically above the common duty to produce evidence when called upon in a criminal proceeding,” Judge Roberts wrote in the decision. “We reaffirm that principle today and hold that the President is neither absolutely immune from state criminal subpoenas seeking his private papers nor entitled to a heightened standard of need.”
