Eva Longoria is hearing it from a former soap opera co-star about a remark she made while sitting down for an interview with television host Chris Wallace!
The Desperate Housewives alum was on Wallace’s HBO Max-slash-CNN interview series Who’s Talking To Chris Wallace this week. She dove into her work on camera, along with her role as a political ambassador and surrogate for the Democrats during much of the show.
But she also talked about her early career in El Lay, and what it took for her to make it in Hollywood. And that’s where Eva tripped up BADLY — at least according to one of her former Young and the Restless co-stars!
So, for a short stint early in her on-air career, Eva played Isabella Braña on that aforementioned long-running daytime TV drama. She was in over 300 episodes of the popular CBS show over three years from 2001 through 2003, according to IMDb. Then, she left for greener pastures — most famously Desperate Housewives, of course — and a long career enjoying Tinseltown’s brightest spotlight!
Wallace asked Longoria about that early time in her career during their sit-down. Eva revealed how she was actually working a full-time office job on set while she was simultaneously filming scenes for the Young and the Restless:
“When I moved to Hollywood, I had my bachelor’s degree. And when I told my mom, ‘I’m going to be an actress,’ she was fine, because I had graduated college. Like, as long as I had finished college. So, I knew I could get a job. I was like, ‘well, I’ll get a job.’ I went to a temp agency and they hired me. I was so good at it, that when I got the Young and the Restless, it didn’t pay enough for me to live off being an actor. So I continued being a headhunter and the Young and the Restless.”
Wow!
That’s commendable. It takes some serious drive to do that!!
But it’s what she said next — comments in which she honestly very clearly shaded the mainstay soap series — that really pissed some people off:
“I would hide the fact that I was on the Young and the Restless to my clients, because they didn’t want, like, a dumb actress handling their accounts. One time, one of my clients was like, ‘you look like a girl I’ve seen on a soap opera.’ And I was like, ‘no, that’s not me, I don’t know who that is.’ I was like the opposite of a publicist’s dream. I was like, ‘don’t tell anybody I’m on that show.’ Because I was still making more money on my day job.”
Uh oh! Not a great thing to bite the hand that feeds ya, as the saying goes. After all, it was one of the places where the longtime A-lister first got her Hollywood start. Ya know??
That’s where veteran daytime drama star Eric Braeden comes in. Braeden is known by soap fans worldwide for playing Victor Newman on the Young and the Restless. And when he caught wind of Longoria’s commentary this weekend, he took to Twitter on Sunday afternoon to rip her a new one.
He started by tweeting:
“EVA LONGORIA: you just made derogatory remarks about daytime actors! You simply weren’t good enough to survive the pressures of this medium! You were very lucky to get on that “housewife” show! You did one show in 8-12 days, with mediocre but salacious dialogue! Our actresses sould run rings around you!! And they did then!! From Robert di Nero to whoever they all are, many of them started in the medium you denigrate! It shows a complete lack of class!!”
Whoa!
Then, when a follower asked for more acting context, he added:
“They’d act rings around her! They only stay if the have the chops to back up their good looks! She has just the latter!”
OUCH!!!
Then, when one more follower asked if Eva ought to apologize for her comments to Chris Wallace, Braeden clarified his comments even further:
“She doesn’t need to apologize! I simply reacted to hearing this while watching CNN and CHRIS WALLACE, who I respect! But when the soap medium is being denigrated by anyone, I’ll go after them! This is the hardest medium for an actor, PERIOD!!! Be effing proud of it!!!”
Say what you will about his comments towards Eva, but at least he stood by ’em and didn’t back down when called out by Twitter followers. Ya know? But still… jeez, man!
BTW, you can watch the exact Wallace-Longoria segment that got Braeden all twisted up in the first place (below):
What do U think, Perezcious readers?
Were Longoria’s comments that bad?! Should she apologize for ’em? Or nah??
