At a recent concert, Adele wondered aloud, “Have you noticed how people are forgetting f****** show etiquette at the moment?” She’s not wrong. In the fall of 2022, Harry Styles was pegged in the with an airborne Skittle and Spanish singer Rosalia was smacked with a bouquet of flowers. Unfortunately, that was just the tip of the iceberg. Over the summer of 2023, there have been a number of on-stage incidents involving fans throwing objects at artists in concert.
Drake is a recent victim. During a July 5, 2023, concert in Chicago, the rapper dodged a cell phone hurled his way as he performed a cover of Ginuwine’s “So Anxious.” In video of the incident (see it here), the phone appeared to hit Drake on the left wrist before it crashed down to the stage. Drake pointed at the phone but didn’t break his stride as he continued with the tune.
But he’s far from the only music star who’s had objects hurled at them lately. Keep reading to see who else has dealt with attacks from flying objects this summer…

Bebe Rexha required stitches after a rogue cell phone hit her in the face during a June 2023 concert in New York City. The man who threw the phone, Nicolas Malvanga, faced repercussions: He was charged with two counts of third degree assault as well as second degree aggravated harassment, third degree attempted assault and second degree harassment. According to a police report, he told cops, “I was trying to see if I could hit her with the phone at the end of the show because it would be funny.” Later, his lawyer spun the tale a little differently. “Nicolas, like many other fans, was hoping to interact in some way with Ms. Rexha as the phone was returned,” the attorney said. “It was never his intention to injure Ms. Rexha in any way.” Bebe kept a good attitude about the situation. After returning to the stage a few days after the incident, she said, “No phones in the face, thank God.”

Kelsea Ballerini was ever the pro after being hit in the face with a bracelet during an Idaho concert in late June 2023. In footage of the incident, the “Peter Pan” singer looked startled and then visibly winced before turning her back to the crowd. Her bandmates soon rushed to help her. After briefly pausing the show to walk off stage, she returned with her guitar. “Can we just talk about what happened?” she asked. “All I care about is keeping everyone safe. If you ever don’t feel safe, please let someone around you know. There’s security everywhere tonight. If anyone’s pushing too much or you just have that gut feeling or anything, always flag it,” she continued. “Don’t throw things, you know?” Kelsea shared a similar message on her Instagram Story after the show. “Hi. I’m fine. Someone threw a bracelet, it hit me in the eye, and it more so just scared me than hurt me,” she wrote. “We all have triggers and layers of fears way deeper than what is shown, and that’s why I walked offstage to calm down and make sure myself, band and crew, and the crowd all felt safe to continue. That’s all I ever want, is for shows to feel like a safe place for us all.”

Things got dead serious during a Pink concert at London’s Hyde Park on June 25, 2023, when the “So What” performer stopped singing mid-show after a concertgoer threw a baggie full of light-colored powder on stage. It was apparently the cremated remains of the person’s mother. Video footage posted on social media showed Pink crouching down on the floor by the baggie. Looking bewildered, she picked it up, barely holding one corner, and looked at the person who tossed the bag. “This is your mom?” she asked. “I don’t know how I feel about this.” Pink then put the bag down and continued singing “Just Like a Pill.” During that same show, someone in the front row also handed the pop star a giant wheel of brie.

Lil Nas X briefly paused a July 1, 2023, concert in Sweden after a fan threw a sex toy on stage. The rapper found humor in the moment. “Who threw their p**** on stage?” he asked the Lollapalooza Stockholm crowd. “What’s wrong with y’all? Let’s go — start the music.”

While some artists have experienced airborne distractions during concerts, an incident involving Ava Max was a little more dangerous. On June 21, 2023, a man rushed the stage during the pop star’s Los Angeles show and slapped her. Although the man was quickly taken down by security, the damage was done. “He slapped me so hard that he scratched the inside of my eye,” she tweeted afterward. “He’s never coming to a show again thank you to the fans for being spectacular tonight in LA though!!”
