Halestorm’s Lzzy Hale talks ‘coming out by accident’ on social media

International rockstar Lzzy Hale stunned fans in 2014 when she replied to a fan question on Twitter, starting her response with: “As a bisexual…”

The Grammy winner admitted this was a complete accident as she sat down with Express.co.uk the day before she took to the OVO Arena stage with her longtime partner Joe Hottinger at the Heavy Music Awards.

Lzzy shared: “I kind of came out by accident. A fan was asking; in my opinion what would be the best way for her to come out to her parents, and so I said something to the effect of; ‘Well, as a bisexual, this is what happened to me’.

“Then all of a sudden everyone’s like; ‘What?!’.”

“It’s funny, I forget sometimes that when you’re talking on the internet, the whole world can see it. I use it as my own personal messenger.”

The Love Bites singer didn’t have an issue with her “accidental outing” though, as a staunch believer of living true to herself and a vocal mental health advocate.

Lzzy continued: “There’s a lot of conversation around that directly related to mental health or even just living your truest life and how important that is, that you don’t waste the short time that you live on this earth by not being who you are.

“People go their entire lives without fully admitting who they are.”

To celebrate Pride Month last year, the Mz Hyde singer revealed that she hadn’t always accepted this side of herself, writing on Instagram: “I understood there was something different about me from an early age.

“Growing up in a semi-Christian household, all of the things I was feeling were inherently wrong. So I hid my bisexuality for a long time.”

Lzzy credited her band Halestorm, which she founded alongside her little brother Arejay when she was just 13, with helping her become “truly comfortable owning all the things that make me…me.”

Just one day after speaking to Express.co.uk, Lzzy and Joe strutted the OVO Arena stage as Halestorm won Best International Artist at the 2023 Heavy Music Awards.

In the winner’s room the pair revealed that, unlike the 2013 Grammys, they did have a small speech prepared this time.

Clutching their new trophy, Joe declared: “We’ll put this next to the Grammy, they can hang out together and be like; ‘See Grammy, this is what a real heavy award feels like!’.

“But you can’t fit tequila in this one.”

Lzzy gushed: “It feels so cool. The first time we came to the UK in 2010 we had no idea if anyone was going to like us, if they were going to accept the weirdness we bring to the table but we found out these are our people.”
