Johnny Depp told his doctor that he severed the tip of his finger himself, in unearthed texts revealed in court.
The 56-year-old actor has repeatedly claimed that his ex-wife Amber heard caused his finger to be cut off when she threw a glass vodka bottle at him, before putting out a cigarette on his cheek during an argument.
Heard alleges that Depp cut off his own finger in a drug and alcohol fuelled rage.
During a preliminary hearing in Depp’s case against The Sun, texts between Depp and his doctor David Kipper from 2015 were read out, in which he wrote ‘I have chopped off my left middle finger’.
In messages read out at the hearing on Wednesday, Depp wrote to Dr David Kipper on 7 March 2015: ‘I cut the top of my middle finger off… What should I do!?? Except, of course, go to a hospital…. I’m so embarrassed for jumping into anything with her… F*** THE WORLD!!! JD.’
On 19 March, the Pirates of the Caribbean star texted: ‘Thank you for everything. I have chopped off my left middle finger as a reminder I should never cut my finger off again!! I love you, brother. Johnny.’
The injury is alleged to have occurred around 3 March 2015 in Australia.
Depp is suing News Group Newspapers (NGN) over a 2018 article which called him a ‘wife-beater’, in relation to allegations that he abused his ex-wife Amber Heard.
He has repeatedly denied the allegations, and alleges that Heard was physically abusive towards him.
Heard, 33, is giving evidence to The Sun in their defence against Depp’s libel claim, and during Wednesday’s hearing Adam Wolanski QC, representing The Sun, alleged that Depp ‘grabbed and choked’ the actress during a fight on 4 March 2015.
He said: ‘That night the complainant shoved Ms Heard into a ping-pong table, threw bottles through window panels of a glass door, then grabbed Ms Heard and tore off her nightgown.
‘The complainant grabbed Ms Heard by her neck and choked her against the refrigerator.
‘The complainant mocked her, while touching and grabbing her by her breasts and repeatedly shoved her up against the refrigerator.
‘The complainant then grabbed Ms Heard by the neck and collarbone, slammed her against the countertop and strangled her.’
A rep for Heard said: ‘In court today, numerous contradictions and inconsistencies in Mr Depp’s evidence – which the judge described as “troubling” – were exposed. Ms Heard obtained a domestic violence restraining order from a judge in 2016. Four years later, Mr Depp has dragged her to give evidence to a court in London and subjected her to trial by media.
‘As today showed, the evidence in court will ultimately speak for itself.’
Depp’s attorney Adam Waldman told Page Six that their opponents ‘can’t even get their fake sequence of events, times or dates straight.’
Another hearing will be held on Friday to decided whether the trial will go ahead. Heard and Depp were both scheduled to appear in court on Monday.
