Katharine McPhee Opened Up About How Pregnancy Reactivated Old Mental Health Issues About Her Body

While plenty of moms-to-be struggle with the changes their bodies go through during pregnancy, the experience can be especially difficult for people with a history of body dysmorphia or disordered eating, like Katharine McPhee.

In a very candid conversation on Katherine Schwarzenegger’s Instagram Live series Before, During and After (BDA), the actress/singer/new mom (she and her husband, David Foster, welcomed their son, Rennie, last February) shared very personal details about the mental health struggles she faced during her pregnancy.

McPhee has been open about her past struggles with disordered eating and bulimia and said she actually called the psychiatrist she saw in her early 20s to talk about the feelings her pregnancy was bringing up.

“I felt like I was losing control and I was going back to this old disordered version of myself, which was upsetting because I just wanted to enjoy my baby,” she explained.

Those conversations led to a couple of important revelations for McPhee: First, she learned that what she was experiencing was completely normal (which she said was a relief in an of itself). And second, she realized that the healthiest decision for her was to stop seeing her dietician during her pregnancy and to focus on listening to her body when it came to food.

And how is McPhee doing now? Pretty great, it seems, based on her extremely healthy approach to her body image and mental health.

“I’ve been trying to just, like, enjoy motherhood and not worry about the size [of] jeans that I want to obsessively be in,” she said. “I’ve just been kind of happy where I’m at.”
