Dame Mary Berry said her mother was unimpressed when the food journalist’s husband bought her chicken pellets.
The Great British Bake Off star, 88, who has been married to her husband Paul Hunnings for 57 years, dished on the bizarre Christmas gift in a new interview.
Speaking to Good Housekeeping, the TV star dished on her most memorable present which left her mum appalled.
“Not long after Paul and I got married, we went to my parents’ house and at the time I was beginning to get very keen on gardening,” Mary revealed. “On Christmas Day, Paul gave me a big tub of chicken pellets, which are fertiliser, and it was all wrapped up in paper.”
She added: “My mother saw me open it and looked at Paul as if to say, ‘How could you?’ She thought it was dreadful, but I was thrilled!”

Mary was the second of three children, born to parents Margaret and Alleyne.
Her father died in 1989, but her mother lived until 2011. She was 105 when she died.
She has been married to her long-term partner and retired antique bookseller Paul Hunnings since 1966
The couple have two sons and a daughter, one of whom Thomas is a tree surgeon and the other Annabelle a professional cook.
