Maya Moore and Jonathan Irons are married!
The 31-year-old former WNBA player revealed during an appearance on Good Morning America on Wednesday (September 16) that she married the man she helped to free from prison due to a wrongful conviction after 23 years.
“We wanted to announce today that we are super excited to continue the work that we’ve been doing together, but doing it as a married couple. We’re excited to share this new chapter of life together,” Maya announced.
Last year, Maya paused her career to help her now-husband overturn a wrongful conviction.
He was originally sentenced to 50 years in prison in 1998 after he was convicted of breaking into a Missouri home and shooting a homeowner. In March, a judge ruled prosecutors suppressed fingerprint evidence that would have strengthened his defense, and he released from prison on July 1.
“I am trying to really just breathe from this long, long battle. There’s a lot of unknowns for a lot of us right now. So I’m still in that camp,” Maya added of possible plans to return to the WNBA.
Congratulations to the happy couple! Check out the first wedding photo.
