OK, Miranda Kerr is obviously an extremely fit, healthy person.
But some of her wellness methods have captured the Internet’s attention for being a little… well, BANANAS.
And no, we don’t mean they’re rich in potassium.
Way back in May the supermodel gave an interview all about her healthy beauty products line KORA.
She talked all about how she mostly uses those products because they’re healthier and how she grew up learning about the superiority of going organic.
Then she was asked about other “wellness” products and measures she and her family took. Her answer was staggering:
“We have a lot. We have the air purifier. We have the stickers you put on the back of your phone for radiation. I have the EMF detector that picks up the waves in the air. I’ve had the whole house checked by a professional who looks for things like EMF waves and things like that.”
OK, we just have to stop. Wow.
First thing’s first. Stickers on your phone for radiation??
Yeah, if you haven’t seen these, they’re a product which came out in the wake of studies about cell phone use and radiation exposure. While the science on just how much damage cell phone use is doing isn’t yet conclusive, the science on these stickers is. They’re nonsense.
According to the Federal Trade Commission‘s consumer protection site, “there is no scientific proof that so-called shields significantly reduce exposure from these electromagnetic emissions.”
“In fact, products that block only the earpiece — or another small portion of the phone — are totally ineffective because the entire phone emits electromagnetic waves. What’s more, these shields may interfere with the phone’s signal, cause it to draw even more power to communicate with the base station, and possibly emit more radiation.”
Next, we need to talk about that EMF thing. No, Miranda isn’t a ghost hunter, she’s genuinely convinced electromagnetic fields are harming her health.
That’s why she turns everything off every night before bed:
“I even have something installed in my Malibu house to turn out all the power while we sleep. It’s basically a button that turns all the power off, except for the fridge and security cameras, in the nighttime. So when you go to sleep, you don’t have any Wi-Fi or electricity in the house at all.”
She says it’s “like camping” with the family, which does actually sound pretty cool. Goodness knows turning off the phones and spending time together as a family can’t hurt.
But is it healthier?
For decades research has been done on whether the electricity being used by household appliances like microwaves is harmful, and so far nada. Per the World Health Organization:
“Despite the feeling of some people that more research needs to be done, scientific knowledge in this area is now more extensive than for most chemicals. Based on a recent in-depth review of the scientific literature, the WHO concluded that current evidence does not confirm the existence of any health consequences from exposure to low level electromagnetic fields.”
Some wellness aficionados swear electrical fields in general create toxins. But the entire earth is surrounded by an electromagnetic field, that’s why compasses work. So if that’s true we’re screwed whether we turn off the wi-fi every night or not.
Oh, btw, Miranda also burns sacred wood called Palo Santo. She says:
“I like using Palo Santo to clear the energy in the space, and I also have little diffusers around the house with essential oils, depending on what’s going on.”
Far be it from us to to chastise someone for their faith systems (provided they aren’t quoting Leviticus at us or something), but burning special wood isn’t the kind of thing some people would want to hear from a person selling them health products.
BTW, you can find many KORA beauty products on Gwyneth Paltrow‘s Goop site.
