Netflix’s new series I Am Not Okay With This has a lot going for it. From its star (Sophia Lillis, who has become one of the industry’s most exciting young stars through roles in It and Sharp Objects) to its creators (the team behind Netflix’s hit series The End of the F***ing World and Stranger Things producers), it would seem like the show has a recipe for success. On top of that, it’s got a bangin’ soundtrack, and a format that sets it apart from the rest of the fray: the entire series is only seven episodes, running at about 20 minutes each.
The show uses that short format to its advantage; at 20 minutes an episode, no time can ever be wasted meandering on one plot point, one character moment, or one tangent. Every moment, every scene, and every character in the show needs to have inherent value to the series at large—the limited time is too valuable to waste. And having just seven brief episodes to explore the teen coming-of-age drama (and superpower discovery) makes that a hallmark trait of the series.
But also packed in those seven short episodes is a whole lot of music—and good music, at that. Between rock (like Pixies, Cults, Echo & The Bunnymen, and The Kinks), synth, and just classic jams (Jessie’s Girl by Rick Springfield, duh), it makes for a banger of a playlist. There’s even an entire new album of original songs (of course featured within the show) from acclaimed guitarist Graham Coxon, credited here as Bloodwitch (he’s both a favorite of Oasis guitarist Noel Gallagher, and also the person behind the original music for The End of the F***ing World ). I Am Not Okay With This is a show that feels proud to boast a soundtrack that’s just as eclectic as the show itself.
You can check the entire I Am Not Okay With This Bloodwitch soundtrack out on all music streaming platforms.
