Phillip Schofield urges fans to ‘be kind’ as he speaks out after coming out as gay during emotional This Morning appearance

Phillip Schofield has urged fans to “be kind” as he took to Instagram to thank everyone for their support after announcing earlier in the day that he’s gay.

The This Morning presenter had appeared on the ITV daytime show alongside close friend and co-host Holly Willoughby to open up on his sexuality, revealing his wife, Steph, and their two daughters, had been nothing short of “amazing” in their support.

Following the appearance, the 57-year-old has taken to Instagram to say he has been reading all of the messages of support.

He wrote: “You will never know how important your support has been today, I’ve read as much as I can.

“Please please, no matter your age or your thoughts, TALK to someone, don’t let your head beat you and hopefully you’ll find out that your friends & family have a remarkable ability to surprise you with their love and understanding.”

Phillip added the hashtag “be kind” alongside and rainbow emoji and a heart emoji.

The presenter became emotional as he appeared on This Morning on Friday, holding back tears as he discussed the support from his family.

Phillip grew emotional when he discussed how supportive his wife of almost 27 years Steph and daughters Molly and Ruby have been during this difficult time for them as a family.

He said: "It hasn't been easy but they are so amazing in their love and support.

"I sat them down and I told them and they jumped up and they gave me a hug, a big hug, a long hug and then they hugged Steph and they said ‘it’s OK, this is fine. We’ll be OK, we will always be a family. Always us four.'"

Phillip said his wife Steph had been "simply astonishing" and revealed they "never had any secrets” and their relationship has always been "honest and open".

He said: “She’s incredible, there’s no-one in my life who would have supported me the way she has.”

And Phillip added of his mother's incredible support: "My mum called me saying I hope you’re okay, I went down to see her and she said ‘oh okay, well I don’t care’."
