The royal family may be all about formalities and keeping in line with royal protocol when they’re out in public, but if there’s one thing they’re pretty chill about, it’s the nicknames they give each other. After all, nobody is actually going to call Prince Charles “His Royal Highness Prince Charles Philip Arthur George, Prince of Wales…Duke of Cornwall, Duke of Rothesay…Lord of the Isles and Prince and Great Steward of Scotland” no matter how much he may want them to.
So far, we know that Meghan Markle calls Prince Harry “H,” Kate Middleton calls Princess Charlotte, “Lottie,” and now, Sophie, Countess of Wessex revealed her nickname for Queen Elizabeth.
This week, Sophie and the Queen attended a reception at Buckingham Palace to celebrate the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust, which works to “prevent unnecessary blindness.” At the event, Sophie, who is married to the Queen’s youngest son, Prince Edward, and is really close to her, gave a speech. In it, she addressed the Queen as “Mama” multiple times.
At one point, she said, “Mama, when I have returned from my travels, I have been so proud to share with you the work I have witnessed being carried out under the umbrella of the Queen Elizabeth Diamond Jubilee Trust and the care of so many people working so hard to save and cure sight.”
Okay, this is such an adorable nickname and makes the Queen sound like a normal human, but obviously, is a “very personal” one that only a handful of people can actually use. So if you ever find yourself in the presence of the Queen, try to hold off on calling her “Mama,” mmkay?
