Rachel Riley, 33, is a firm fixture on the Channel 4 show Countdown, alongside co-stars Nick Hewer, 75, and Susie Dent, 54. During a recent broadcast, the host quizzed the blonde beauty on whether she’d ever encountered a musical talent, which later gained prominence. Nick discussed The Great Escape Festival which is held in Brighton and showcases over 400 new artists from all over the world across 35 venues. Speaking about the event, he said: “Fantastic, isn’t it? Sort of like a showcase for emerging talent,” before he quizzed Rachel saying: “What about you, did you ever spot a musical talent and that talent flowered into public recognition?”
Rachel replied: “No, I’m exactly the opposite. I’m last on the music front.
“I remember one year I heard this really cool indie song around Christmas, playing on Radio One. And then when I got to my friends Christmas party, I was like, ‘I’ve heard this cool new song, I’ll try and find it’.”
She continued: “Turns out it was The Waitresses from the 1980s, made before I was born.”
The humorous tale got a chuckle from Nick and the studio audience.
Rachel added: “So if you want new talent emerging that people do not know, don’t ask me.”
But there appeared to be a silver lining as she admitted comedy is more her strength when it comes to seeking out new talent.
“I can find you some comedians, especially on 8 Out of 10 Cats Does Countdown,” Rachel said.
“We always have brand new people here. But music, no.”
The mathematician is not only a regular on the daytime show but is also a regular feature on the Countdown spin-off show alongside Jimmy Carr.
Meanwhile, the Channel 4 favourite recently announced she is expecting her first child with ex-Strictly Come Dancing boyfriend Pasha Kovalev, 39.
Appearing on last week’s episode of Celebrity Gogglebox, the Countdown favourite addressed their unborn baby’s gender, a month after announcing they were expecting.
Talking about whether they know if they’re having a boy or a girl, Rachel said to her beau: “It’s too early.”
She exclaimed: “I can’t see a penis!”
“But they said it was too early so I might just be insulting our son,” she laughed.
Elsewhere, Rachel showed off her blossoming baby bump as she attended the charity football match Soccer Aid 2019 where she confirmed she how far along she was in her pregnancy.
She exclaimed: “I am four months pregnant and have been sleeping for the last four months.”
Celebrity Gogglebox continues next Friday on Channel 4 at 9pm.
