She recently brought viewers to tears with her documentary, Kate Garraway: Caring For Derek, and now the star’s friend Roman Kemp has hailed the Good Morning Britain presenter as “superwoman” for her care of her husband.
Roman, 29, and Kate, 54, became close after bonding in the I’m A Celebrity…Get Me Out Of Here! jungle back in 2019.
But just three months after the ITV reality show wrapped, Kate’s husband Derek Draper was admitted to hospital with Covid-19 and later placed into a coma.
Former political advisor Derek, also 54, was finally able to leave hospital a year later in April 2021, but since then he has required 24-hour care, with Kate and a series of carers providing round the clock support.
Viewers also saw Kate and Derek flying to Mexico so the dad-of-two could undergo treatment.
Speaking exclusively to OK!, the Capital Breakfast host calls the situation “absolutely heartbreaking” and “terrifying”.
He said: “It’s absolutely heartbreaking but I’ve stood by her since we were in the jungle – she is Superwoman. What she’s doing for her kids and her family is amazing.
“The amount of people in the industry who have been helping her is testament to how lovely she is.
“I was lucky enough to know Derek before this all happened and it’s terrifying.”
Roman added that he “prays” that Kate and Derek’s children – daughter Darcey, 16, and Billy, 12 – will get their dad back one day, saying: “I’m fortunate that when my family went through something similar [Roman’s father Martin suffered two brain tumours in 1995] I got my dad back, and I pray for [Kate’s children] Darcey and William that they have that at some point.”
The star has continued to support Kate since Derek’s diagnosis and even help Billy celebrate his birthday in the summer of 2020.

Kate marked Billy’s eleventh birthday by throwing an epic jungle-themed bash in the family’s garden and Roman popped along wearing his I’m A Celebrity camp clothes.
Roman was joined by his dad, actor and Spandau Ballet star dad Martin Kemp, who presented Billy with an incredible jungle-themed cake.
Sharing a snap of himself and Kate from the day, Roman wrote: “So nice to see my amazing jungle mate @kategarraway for Bill’s birthday!
"Got back into my jungle kit for some camping and nerf wars (Kate did tell me I need to let the outfit go now…) happy birthday bill!"
