Saturday Night Live has created more than its fair share of memorable characters. But few are as unforgettable as Bill Hader’s Stefon, the Weekend Update New York corespondent who schooled viewers in the surreal goings on in the city’s underground club scene. And now, the sketch show’s YouTube channel—which often keeps many of its segments offline—has released every single Stefon appearance ever.
Stefon appeared as a recurring character from 2008 to 2013, when Hader ended his run on SNL. Hader has stopped by a few times since to revive the Weekend Update icon, most recently in 2018, when he returned in an episode hosted by former SNL writer and Stefon co-creator John Mulaney.
In a behind-the-scenes video SNL released last year, Mulaney shed some light on Stefon’s origins, including why on earth he suggested that an NYC club kid character wear an Ed Hardy shirt.
“I did not know what an Ed Hardy shirt was,” said Mulaney. “I was picturing something from that Macaulay Culkin-Seth Green movie Party Monster, like a latex shirt or something. And then he got an Ed Hardy shirt, which is like weird snake tattoo art. And even though it was absolutely not what we thought it was, we were like, ‘Great!’”
Thanks to SNL’s Youtube channel, we can now enjoy the full slate of Stefon appearances, including the character’s loving send-off—a sketch that found him marrying then-Weekend Update anchor Seth Meyers in a moment that Meyers described as being “just a little bit less emotional than my actual wedding.”
