Heartbreaking news in the world of music today.
Sinéad O’Connor has died at the far-too-young age of 56, according to reports from her native Ireland. Her family released a statement confirming the news, saying:
“It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our beloved Sinéad. Her family and friends are devastated and have requested privacy at this very difficult time.”
No cause of death has been made public.

The singer was still in mourning for her son Shane, who died by suicide at the age of just 17 last year. In one of her final social media posts, just over a week ago, Sinéad posted a photo with her late son, writing:
“Been living as undead night creature since. He was the love of my life, the lamp of my soul. We were one soul in two halves. He was the only person who ever loved me unconditionally. I am lost in the bardo without him”
So unimaginably painful. And now the family has one more soul gone too soon to mourn.
Sinéad rose to prominence for her peerless voice in the late ’80s, then was launched into superstardom from a startlingly spare and emotional cover of Prince‘s Nothing Compares 2 U. It’s one of those covers that manages to surpass the original, moving and inspiring countless others.
We’ll always remember her this way… And nothing will ever compare… #RIP…
