Former Arsenal captain Tony Adams spoke about how grateful he was for his wife Poppy Teacher in a candid interview back in 2018. The Strictly Come Dancing contestant also expressed some “regret” over his lack of culinary know-how and “thanked god” that his wife was a dab hand in the kitchen.
“I regret my own parents not teaching me to cook,” Tony explained in the throwback interview.
“Thank god for my wife, a fantastic cook. Her name was Poppy Teacher [a member of the whisky family] when I met her, when I’d given up drink and self-medication.”
“I encountered a loving family, very knowledgeable of the bad effects of alcohol,” he continued.
“But I can still say I wake up with a Teacher’s every morning. That’s my joke,” he told the Guardian.
Tony and Poppy married back in 2004, with the former being a recovering alcoholic and the latter being a whisky heiress.
The former England and Arsenal captain, 55, wed Poppy, 49, at a private ceremony in Kent.
Poppy is the great-great-great granddaughter of whisky firm founder William Teacher.
At the time, her mother Petra said: “Poppy’s very happy. We’re delighted.”
Tony was previously married to Jane Shea from 1992, before the couple divorced in 1997.
He shares three children with Poppy, who are named Atticus, Hector and Iris.
The sporting star also has a son and daughter from his first marriage to Jane, who are called Oliver and Amber.
Tony is currently competing in this year’s series of Strictly Come Dancing with partner Katya Jones.

Before Tony took to the stage on Sunday night for the first round of eliminations, Poppy expressed her love for him in a sweet gesture.
Reflecting on his first performance, she explained: “He was devastated, he had a complete mind blank but he kind of loved it at the same time.”
Tony failed to impress the judges with his Strictly debut after his and Katya’s tango landed them at the bottom of the leaderboard with a total score of 15 out of 40.
However, Poppy’s faith in her husband never waivered, as she spoke about his Charleston routine.
She confirmed: “He’s going to nail it, I have total confidence, I’ve never been so proud or so in love with him.”
As the audience went “aww,” Poppy added: “And I’m going to proper cry.”
Tony and Katya then took to the stage to perform the Charleston to My Old Man’s A Dustman by Foster and Allen.
Thankfully, the pair were then met with a huge round of applause from the audience and were able to surpass their previous score with a total of 22 points.
Strictly Come Dancing returns tonight at 6.30pm on BBC One.
