Susanna Reid: ‘I feared anyone walking close to me’ GMB star on traumatic ordeal

Good Morning Britain host, Susanna Reid, described how she had been a victim of London knife crime after being mugged near her home in Stockwell, South London. She recalled the shocking incident and urged London Mayor Sadiq Khan to do more to tackle knife crime in the city.

The journalist opened up about the harrowing experience in her Daily Mail Column.

She wrote about how her handbag had been slashed with a knife and £60 she had just taken out of the cashpoint was stolen from her.

She went on to say how helpless she felt when reporting the incident to police, as she was unable to identify the perpetrator.

And the aftermath of the ordeal led to her losing her trust in others.

She wrote: “Afterwards, there was basically nothing police could do.

“Overwhelmed by fear and fury, I couldn’t identify the boy.

“I felt useless, and sensed the police were frustrated, but I was simply too shocked.

“For months afterwards I feared anyone walking close to me on the street, totally losing my trust.”

Susanna continued to address the knife crime epidemic in London and how she had interviewed London’s Mayor Sadiq Khan about the issue for Good Morning Britain.

She concluded that while her experience was “fleeting” she was still “broken” over the prospect of people losing their lives.

She wrote: “The crime against me was fleeting.

“I lost just a small amount of money, a degree of trust and a raincoat.

She asked him: “Why are we not doing enough? Why are you not doing enough to save our teenagers?”

He responded: “We have just seen another mum and dad lose their child to knife crime.

“Both of you have talked about the personal consequences of violent crime. But City Hall is working with the police and the NHS and we have seen a decrease over the last year – it’s not good enough we are not complacent.”

She interrupted: “Yet it’s at a record high? How long have you been Mayor?

Sadie responded: “Three and a half years. As well as the continuing decrease in knife crime, moped crime is also down by 50 per cent.”
