The Killers band members Brandon Flowers and Ronnie Vannucci reflect on their “Mr. Brightside” video during the latest episode of Vevo‘s “Watch This” series.
Speaking about the video, directed by Sophie Muller, and featuring Eric Roberts, drummer Vannucci said he felt “strangely comfortable,” during filming.
“When you start a band, these kind of scenarios are actually the furthest thing from your mind. It never felt natural to me to make a music video,” said Flowers. “It still doesn’t. It’s hard enough for us to finish a song and an album.”
“It never felt natural to me, to make a music video, and it still doesn’t. We made an indie version of the video probably months before this on the east coast, and it wasn’t as much of a production.
This was the first time we had been in a huge soundstage and had all these cameras.”
“It’s just a song about betrayal. I was betrayed,” he added. “And I was able to turn it into a masterpiece.”
“What’s the deal with the apple?” Vannucci asks during the conversation, referring to the fruit’s presence right through the visual of the song.
“Forbidden fruit… he chooses a girl with the apple,” says Flowers.
“Oh is that what it is? It’s kind of a thoughtful idea to use the apple as the, sort of, tool for instruction,” smiles Vannucci.
The Killers emerged on the rock scene in 2004 with Hot Fuss, and “Mr. Brightside” was the second track on the album.
