TV funnyman Eddie Large dies after catching coronavirus as he battled heart failure

Yesterday, his grief-stricken family told how they had not been able to say goodbye. Wife Patsy, son Ryan and daughters Samantha and Alison were separated from him during his last days and were only able to speak to him on the telephone. Last night, Patsy said: “We are all absolutely heartbroken. Eddie fought so hard to live. Catching coronavirus was the final straw for him. Our hearts are broken.”

Ryan said: “Due to this horrible disease, we had been unable to visit him at the hospital, but all the family and close friends spoke to him every day.”

Eddie’s agent Peter Mansfield said: “His family were very sad not to be able to be in the same room as him in the last week because of coronavirus.”

Yesterday, Ant and Dec were among those who paid tribute to the star.

The duo said on Twitter: “So sad to hear about the passing of Eddie Large.

“We had the pleasure of working with him a few years ago. He just loved making people laugh. He will be missed. Our thoughts are with his family at this time.”

Eddie and sidekick Syd Little hit the big time after winning TV talent show Opportunity Knocks in 1971.

They went on to become one of Britain’s most famous double acts, with The Little and Large Show attracting up to 18 million viewers a week.

Last night, Syd, 77, said: “He had been ill for a while but when it happens, it hits you. We were together 60 years. We’ve had some great times together and that’s what I want to remember.

“We did everything there was to do in showbiz, and we did it together.”
