Looks like the Cambridge family might be gearing up for a move to the suburbs. Right now, Prince William and Kate Middleton (and their kids—Prince George, 8, Princess Charlotte, 6, and Prince Louis, 3) split their time between two primary residences: Kensington Palace in London and their country home, Anmer Hall, in Norfolk.
According to a the Daily Mail, a source close to the royal family says Will and Kate “will move to Berkshire and start a quiet life in the country” because they feel like at “this stage in their life suburbia makes perfect sense.”
Moving to Berkshire would do a few very important things for the Cambridge fam. First, it would put them much closer to Windsor Castle, which the Queen has made her primary residence since the start of the pandemic. Since Will and Kate are expected to take on a much more central role in the royal family in the coming years, being near the Queen would make a lot of sense, logistically speaking.
Second, it would be a lot closer to London than Anmer Hall, which would make spending weekends there a lot easier on the family (apparently, it’s just a 25 minute commute to London with a police escort). Since Will and Kate’s official offices are still based at Kensington Palace and George and Charlotte both attend school in the city, a *full* break from London life seems highly unlikely for the family.
“Anmer Hall made sense while William was a helicopter pilot in East Anglia and it was useful for Christmases at Sandringham, but it doesn’t really work any more,” a royal source told the Mail on Sunday. “It’s a little too far away for weekends, but Windsor is a perfect compromise. They are eyeing up options in the area.”
Finally, third, Berkshire is much closer to where Kate’s family (her parents, sister, Pippa, and brother, James) all live, which would make it that much easier for the Middletons to be actively involved in George, Charlotte, and Louis’ lives.
All in all, according to the Telegraph, Will and Kate also see the area as “the perfect place” to raise their kids. And the Daily Mail‘s sources say Will and Kate already have their sights set on a specific Berkshire home, too—Fort Belvedere, which is owned by the Crown Estate and is currently leased to family that are close friends of the royal family.
If they do move, we commoners will just have to hope that Kate stages a birthday portrait shoot for one of the Cambridge kids on the grounds so we can get a glimpse of the new space.
