When it was active, Meghan Markle and Prince Harry’s social media (mainly their Instagram) was a major hit when it comes to otherwise mundane and impersonal royal social media accounts. @sussexroyal shared adorable photos of baby Archie, posted videos of Meghan surprising her “Forces for Change” cover stars, and provided a place where their followers could learn more about the obstacles they face as a family under intense scrutiny. But since Meghan and Harry have moved on from royal life and to America, their former social media manager, David Watkins, was eagerly snatched up by Prince William and Kate Middleton.
According to People and David’s LinkedIn, Meghan and Harry’s former staffer now does digital and social media for the Cambridges. It’s not clear when David started working for them, but as Marie Claire pointed out, Will and Kate’s Instagram presence does seem more chill these days.
Now that Meghan and Harry are off doing their own thing and heading up the Archewell foundation, it’s time to see if their follower count explodes. Perhaps this will be the true indication of whether or not the royal family was actually tinkering with the Sussexs’ and Cambridges’ follower numbers to make it seem like they all had similar-sized platforms. (At the moment, the @kensingtonpalace Instagram boasts 11.5 million followers while @sussexroyal has 11.3 million.)
It’ll definitely be interesting to see how working with David influences William and Kate’s communication style with the public and how Meghan and Harry will develop their own style away from the umbrella of the royal family.
