If there’s one event in America where royalty reigns, it would probably have to be the Met Gala. The annual event, which takes place at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City, is the height of high fashion. Each year, there’s a new theme, co-chairs, and list of attendees who grace the arrival carpet with their presence — and their elegant, eclectic style. Over the years, there have been plenty of major A-listers who stole the show, but none ever do it with the same grace and poise as members of the royal family.
We’re using the phrase “royal family” a bit loosely here, especially since there’s more than just one royal family out there! Of course, we all know the British royals have dabbled in the style scene, and none ever did it quite like Princess Diana. The fashion icon attended the Met Gala on December 4, 1995, wearing a blue Versace slip dress with black lace detailing and a sapphire pendant. It was simple, elegant, and made a statement on the brand of style the Princess of Wales fashioned all her life.
Of course, Diana wasn’t the only royal to attend the Met Gala. In the years since, there’s been royalty from Jordan, Greece, and one royal with ties to the Kennedys — arguably America’s royalty for a time. From the British royal family to international royal icons, take a look at more times royals attended the Met Gala throughout the years.
