Amy Schumer On Why She Stopped Breastfeeding Son Gene: 'Not For Me'

Amy Schumer is getting candid. The comedian, who welcomed son Gene in May with husband Chris Fischer, appeared on the Informed Pregnancy and Parenting Podcast and opened up about her struggles with breastfeeding and her decision to switch her 7-month-old to formula.

After a month of trying to breastfeed, and even meeting with a lactation expert, the mother-of-one chose to move on. “He didn’t latch and I just didn’t feel that push to make that happen. Then I pumped for like the first month,” she said, adding that she wanted to ensure that her son got the colostrum, which is found in early breastmilk and promotes growth and health in infants.

“Then I was like, ‘Not for me.’ … This is not for me and I didn’t want to do it,” she admitted. “Some people just absolutely love it and I’m so happy for them, and it was just bumming me out. But then I was also kind of proud doing it and whatever and getting him the milk and stuff. Then once it occurred to me that I could stop. I was like, ‘I’m going to stop.’ … And then, every week what I did was just took away one session of the pumping.”

The decision wasn’t an easy one for Schumer, who revealed that she was struggling with the “pressure” to breastfeed — but ultimately realized she had to make her own health a priority as well. “You matter and it’s going to be better for your baby that you’re okay,” she said. “All generations were raised on formula.”

The Trainwreck star has also been vocal about other struggles that come along with motherhood — like returning to work. The actress opened up on her Instagram page about breaking down emotionally over her decision to go back to work when Gene was 3 months. “A couple days I’ve cried from missing him. But it’s mostly good to be back and the breaks energize me to be a better mom and appreciate our time even more.”
