Ed Sheeran's grandmother Anne Mary, who inspired one of his hit songs, dies

Ed Sheeran’s grandmother Anne Mary, also known as Nancy, has died.

Nancy died peacefully at Castle Gardens Nursing Home in Enniscorthy last Tuesday.

Sheeran’s grandmother will be laid to rest on Wednesday after a funeral in St Patrick’s Church, Monaseed, Gorey.

Nancy was the source of inspiration behind the singer’s hit Nancy Mulligan, one of Sheeran’s most personal songs from his 2017 Divide.

The tune follows her romance with Sheeran’s grandfather William, despite coming from different religious backgrounds.

An obituary for his grandma said she was a ‘beloved wife of the late Bill and loving mother of Jim, Bill, Peter, Chris, John, MaryAnne, Bridget and the late Sally and sister of the late Thomas, Jim, May and Peggy.’

The Bad Habits hitmaker, 32, previously explained the meaning behind the traditional ballad.

He said: ‘They got engaged and no one turned up at their wedding.’

‘He stole all the gold teeth in his dental surgery and melted them down into a wedding ring, and they wore borrowed clothes to get married, and just basically have this kind of Romeo and Juliet romance, which is like the most romantic thing. So I thought I’d write a song about it and make it a jig.’

Nancy and William went on to have eight children and 23 grandchildren.

Sheeran’s grandmother praised his musical talents back in 2017.

She told RTE at the time: ‘He was lovely as a kid and he came every year on holidays once we moved here.’

Nancy, who was 92 at the time of the interview, added: ‘I never think of him as famous, I have to say.

‘He’s exactly the same as he always was – if anything he visits and it’s very rare because he’s always working and when you think we was visiting from the age of 14, I mean you have to feel sorry for him, you know he’s so tired but he loved it.’

Sheeran is currently embroiled in a legal battle which centres on his 2015 track Thinking Out Loud and Marvin Gaye’s hit, Let’s Get It On.

Sheeran is accused of copying parts of Gaye’s track in Thinking Out Loud.
