Tom Hanks shared an incredibly emotional moment with a fan whose life was changed by Forrest Gump.
The nicest man in Hollywood starred as the titular character in the beloved 1994 Oscar winning movie, and this week he saw another example first-hand of the impact the film had on neurodiverse people around the world.
During An Evening With Tom Hanks at London’s Westminster Central Hall on Thursday, which saw him interviewed by Richard E Grant on stage, the 66-year-old actor had a heartwarming exchange with fan Fay.
The emotional fan – who was dressed in Forrest Gump’s legendary red hat – told the man himself: ‘My name’s Fay and I’ve tried to meet you for 10 years, I’ve been to 15 events and I absolutely love you!’
Tom was gobsmacked by the revelation, and he looked visibly moved as she told him exactly why Forrest Gump means so much to her.
She explained: ‘I moved to London the last few years. I have to just say Forrest Gump changed my life. I’m neurodiverse and this film came out and it showed me that there’s no limits, you can get past everything, everything can be barrier-free.
‘I can’t believe I’m here.’
She got her phone as they took a selfie on stage – with a cheeky photobomb by Richard for good measure – and Tom read out her handwritten sign, which said: ‘Tom. I’ve been running for 34 years, eight months and 19 days to meet you.’
They shared a tight embrace, before Tom teased that he would sign just one copy of his debut novel The Making of Another Major Motion Picture Masterpiece for Fay, joking that everyone else would miss out.
While he was signing the book, he asked her to tell everyone about herself, and he tried to congratulate her from being from Manchester after City’s treble success until she admitted she’s ‘not a City fan’.
‘The b*****ds got lucky,’ he quipped.
Tom explained he was using a ‘code word’ to sign the books, admitting it’ll make sense to anyone who reads his novel.
‘I’m gonna write on this the initials Y.A.L., which is a code word that was in the book so if you read the book, you will understand what that is,’ he cryptically told the audience.
‘Thank you so much. This means everything,’ she said, and her hero gave her ‘one more hug’, making sure Fay had a night she’ll never forget.
