Good news, anime fans: You can catch Studio Ghibli’s first film in nearly five years streaming on HBO Max. If you or your kids have enjoyed Studio Ghibli’s beautiful anime style, you all might be surprised to see Earwig and the Witch. Studio co-founder Hayao Miyazaki’s son, Gorō, has taken the helm and brought Studio Ghibli’s first CGI film to life.
It follows a young orphan, Earwig, who finds herself magically transported into a brand new world. She’s taken in by a blue-haired witch with no name, who also has a demon chef named Mandrake. This unlikely trio naturally is connected in a way that will be revealed in the film. Oh, and there’s Earwig’s black cat familiar, Thomas.
You’ll recognize many of the voices Earwig and the Witch: Mandrake is voiced by Richard E. Grant (Can You Ever Forgive Me?) in the dubbed English version. Dan Stevens, musician Kacey Musgraves, Vanessa Marshall, and Taylor Paie Henderson also lend their voices to the movie.
Because movies and TV premieres for kids feel few and far between these days, families should definitely tune in to this new HBO Max offering. It’s a great gateway to the rest of Ghibli’s vast archives on the streaming service. Plus, the whole family will enjoy it. Intrigued? Here’s how to watch it…
How to Watch Earwig and the Witch
Studio Ghibili made a deal with HBO to make the vast majority of the exhaustive Studio Ghibli collection available for streaming on HBO’s new streaming platform HBO Max. Before that, it was difficult for fans to track down the deeper Studio Ghibli cuts.

HBO Max has a special deal going on through March 1 where you can get 20 percent off a six-month subscription to the service. It’d usually cost $89.94, but you can save $20.
