Kate Garraway has shared how her son was left in tears after husband Derek Draper was able to have a brief conversation.

The Good Morning Britain presenter, 56, has been caring for Derek, 55, since he contracted a severe case of coronavirus in 2020.

After being hospitalised for 13 months and being put in a medically-induced coma at the time, Derek still requires around the clock care.

Since his release, he has been in and out of hospital numerous times for a variety of health complications.

Earlier this year the couple were seen enjoying a day out in London together, and recently attended an Elton John show, where the singer noticed them in the crowd before serenading the pair.

Now, during an appearance on Loose Women on Thursday, Kate has shared a recent interaction between her husband and son that was particularly affecting.

‘We’ve got some positive things with Derek and even though the struggles are still the same, I took a decided…we need to fill our days with good stuff,’ she said.

When asked if the family have been able to speak to Derek, Kate said that it was ‘more of a whisper’.

‘I don’t think we are necessarily going to have a conversation but you get fantastic moments,’ she said.

‘This is so silly, but Billy had a new basketball and he was bouncing it and suddenly Derek said “is that a new ball?” and we all just gasped.

‘And Billy goes “yes, yes it is” and he goes “it’s nice” and seeing him able to interact, it is something you take for granted, but then Billy was in tears.’

She added: ‘It’s things like that which really lift you up, but then the next day he can be completely still.’

During the interview Kate also revealed she was working on a third documentary after the success of Finding Derek and Caring for Derek.

While she said it didn’t have a title yet, the plan was to share the stories of unpaid carers and how they were ‘keeping the country going’.

‘Millions of people are caring out of love…but I didn’t want to make it about blame or anger, because all sorts of government’s have failed to get to the bottom of it, but we have got to find a way of making caring a priority and worthy,’ she said.

‘We are on a journey to try and do that…within an hour.’

She also spoke about how her upcoming book, The Strength of Love, which is set to share how Kate gets through difficult times.

‘I didn’t want to write a book about the low times – I wanted to share how I got through,’ she said.

Her updates come a day after getting herself into a bit of an awkward situation after a Classic FM radio presenter accidentally walked in on her on the toilet.

The broadcaster decided to arrive at the Smooth Radio studios, where she hosts a weekday programme, much earlier than usual on Wednesday to catch up on admin before the show went live on-air.

But after falling asleep, she awoke just as a colleague was walking in, unwittingly bursting in on Kate in an uncompromising position.

Loose Women airs weekdays from 12.30pm on ITV1.
