The summer months always get a bad rap for turning out forgettable TV, but times are a’changing, friends. The list of Netflix’s July 2019 releases just dropped, and it goes to show that the streaming service has your back when it comes to the small screen. Even better? It isn’t just TV you’ll be binge-watching with the cool A/C on scorching summer days (and, if you live in the south, during equally muggy summer nights) — Netflix is releasing 44 new original movies and shows in the coming month.
You know the drill though, right? In order to receive these new gifts from Netflix, we have to make room. To make that room, we have to say goodbye to a bunch of titles leaving the service in July. You can peruse that entire list of departures over at Entertainment Weekly. But there are a few exits to make note of right now — like, for example, the fact that the entire body of Pretty Little Liars will be taking its final bow. And Keanu Reeves may be having a moment, but that isn’t going to keep The Matrix, The Matrix Reloaded and The Matrix Revolutions around past June. We even have to say goodbye to Turner and Hooch (*sob*).
But, trust, you’ll be rewarded greatly for said sacrifices. Here are all of the incredible new arrivals coming to Netflix in July — with our top picks for titles you need to stream ASAP.
Stranger Things (July 4)
It seems like it’s been roughly one million years since we last visited Hawkins, Indiana, but the third season of Netflix’s beloved circa-’80s series is back. Bonus? It arrives on July 4, so you’re guaranteed to have a killer backup plan for Independence Day if your party plans bomb.
Point Blank (July 12)
This action-thriller stars Frank Grillo and Anthony Mackie… need we say more? If that alone isn’t enough to convince you, consider that Mackie will be playing an ER nurse on a desperate mission to save his pregnant wife from kidnappers. To do so, he’ll have to team up with an injured murder suspect (Grillo). Our pulse is already pounding!
The Princess and the Frog (July 16)
Let’s give credit where credit is due — The Princess and the Frog is absolutely one of the best Disney films ever made (fight us). Cozy up with your family on the sofa and tune into Tiana’s magical, musical, foodie journey.
Orange Is the New Black (July 26)
We don’t really want to face the facts any more than you do, but it’s time to say goodbye to our favorite ladies of Litchfield Correctional Facility. The upcoming seventh season will be the last, so you aren’t going to want to waste one minute cueing up Piper and the gals.
Wentworth (July 31)
Another prison series, yes, but Wentworth has a decidedly grittier vibe than OITNB and, hooray, it isn’t ending yet (that we know of). The Australian prison drama is a must-watch, especially since this season could very well determine the fate of Rita and a few other memorable inmates.
