Ncuti Gatwa responds to speculation over sexuality from Sex Education fans

Ncuti Gatwa has further addressed speculation about his sexuality, saying nobody should ‘feel an obligation’ to surrender their personal privacy.

The Sex Education star’s breakout performance on the Netflix series as Eric Effiong earned him worldwide recognition as an LGBTQ icon.

However, the upcoming 15th Doctor – set to take over during the 2023 festive period – has consistently shut down speculation about his own sexuality.

Ncuti, 30, is defiant about keeping his personal privacy and professional career as separate as possible.

‘After Sex Education, we all became public property, to an extent. You have to fight for your right to privacy after that,’ the Barbie actor said.

Speaking to British Vogue, he continued on to say he does sometimes feel as though he ‘owes’ something to viewers and fans of his work.

However, he added: ‘[I set my boundaries], I knew I wanted to separate the private and public, and that I never wanted my personal life to overshadow my work.’

‘I believe everyone is on their own journey – it’s important that no one feels an obligation to others in relation to what’s happening to them internally.’

Reflecting on the series that made him a national treasure, Ncuti remarked that Sex Education was all about ‘taking things at your own pace’.

Ncuti announced earlier this year that the upcoming fourth season of Sex Education will be his last, as he leaves to focus on being the 15th Doctor.

Following the news that he would be stepping into the Tardis, it was explained that Ncuti had never publicly addressed his sexuality.

So far, the hype around Ncuti’s Doctor has been off the charts, with several cast photos, featuring some outstanding outfits, delighting fans everywhere.

The next season of Doctor Who, which will follow on from three special episodes starring David Tennant, will see the full return of showrunner Russell T Davies.

Davies, 60, helmed the return of the BBC series in 2005 and was lead showrunner until his departure in 2010, when Steven Moffatt was named as his successor.
