Though body image concerns and struggles to form healthy eating habits can affect the best of us, celebrities have the added pressure of living with their bodies under round-the-clock scrutiny in the public eye. But sometimes, becoming a mom can change all of that. In a new interview, Victoria Beckham discussed how her eating habits changed after she became a mother, and she drew a powerful distinction between the priorities she had earlier in life and those she considers as a parent. Beckham’s body has often been dissected by tabloids, and the star has been open about struggling with disordered eating earlier in life. Today, Beckham says those times are far behind her.
The 45-year-old star has four children with pro soccer player David Beckham: 20-year-old Brooklyn, 17-year-old Romeo James, 8-year-old Harper Seven, and 14-year-old Cruz, and her kids has made a huge difference in how Beckham approaches healthy eating, as she told Glamour UK. “When you have children, it [puts] a lot into perspective,” the entrepreneur said. “You realize they notice everything. I would never sit down with my kids and skip a meal — they need to see that their mum eats healthily — you need to show little people how to be healthy and happy with who they are.”
This isn’t the first time Beckham has reflected on how important proper guidance is when you’re young. In 2017, she published a letter to her 18-year-old self in Vogue UK, imparting the following advice: “At school you eat Super Noodles and boxes of Frosties because they say they are fat free, and you will endure many other silly fad diets (including an addiction to green juices),” she wrote. “Learn to embrace your imperfections — that is what I want to tell you … my 60-year-old self would probably say the same thing to me as I am telling you now: Enjoy yourself a little more. Be less image-conscious. Learn to relax.”
Beckham also discussed other health habits she’s picked up in her 40s, including “two hours a day in the gym,” and embracing “healthy fats” (which she said she was “scared to eat” earlier in life), as she told Glamour UK. While her workout regime is not for the faint of heart, Beckham insisted that gym time is her “self care” — not a way of monitoring her appearance.
“When I’m in the gym, I decompress,” Beckham explained. “That’s where I get my ideas, think and look after myself. When you have children, you don’t have the luxury of lying in, so that’s my time.” Some of the best lessons Beckham can impart to her kids are that healthy habits are a way of improving how you feel, and that health and happiness are more important than how you look.
No matter what Beckham does, she may never escape the rumors and commentary that have always surrounded her slim physique. As recently as 2017, an ad presenting Beckham as an “anorexic fashion icon” ran in the UK. But Beckham’s comments here prove that she’s working hard to create her own value system when it comes to what’s best for her body. “There’s something really liberating about embracing who I am at 45 years old,” she said. “Owning it, feeling confident, feeling content.” We couldn’t agree more.
