In addition to the famous awards shows, like the Oscars, the Golden Globes, and the Screen Actors’ Guild Awards, the best and brightest in the movie industry can also receive high honors in the annual Cannes Film Festival. The festival’s biggest award, the Palme d’Or, for example, is a highly competitive prize that honors the best overall movie during the festival. Previous winners of the Palma d’Or include Taxi Driver, The Pianist, Parasite, and Pulp Fiction, among many others.
Among the movies that will compete in this year’s festival, which begins on May 16, are Asteroid City by Wes Anderson, Alice Rohrwacher’s La Chimera, Wim Wenders’ Perfect Days, and Hirokazu Kore-eda’s Monster, Vulture reports. Also premiering in the festival will be James Mangold’s Indiana Jones and the Dial of the Destiny and Martin Scorsese’s Killers of the Flower Moon.
Overseeing the contenders and judging their success will be the jury comprised of international actors, directors and filmmakers including Brie Larson, Paul Dano, Julia Ducournau, and Ruben Östlund.
On Tuesday, the jury was announced in a jury photocall and press junket. The Fabelmans star Dano reminded the press of the ongoing WGA strikes going on in Hollywood. “My wife is currently picketing with my 6-month-old, strapped to her chest,” he said, referencing his wife and fellow actress Zoe Kazan, per Associated Press. “I will be there on the picket line when I get back home.”
