Queen Margrethe of Denmark is a royal style icon, and despite being 83 years old, her wardrobe is brimming with fabulously vibrant, youthful garments.
Typically dressed in multicolour, this royal has an enviable clothing collection, the best piece of all arguably being her bright yellow raincoat.
Raincoats are reserved for dreary, dismal days but Queen Margrethe is a ray of sunshine whenever she wears this marvellous piece.
She has been wearing the coat for years, a mid-length creation with canary yellow shoulders, collar, lapels and pockets.
The rest is covered entirely in an array of flowers – big and small – in blue, green, yellow, pink and of course, more yellow. It is belted at the middle to unveil the royal’s tiny waist.

If this piece wasn’t eccentric and colourful enough, Queen Margrethe accessorises it with a canary yellow hat, which fastens with a strap under her chin.
When she attended Queen Sonja Of Norway’s 70th birthday celebrations back in 2007, the stylish Queen wore her rainwear over a butter yellow jumper, off-white trousers and white shoes.
She fabulously accessorised with a white handbag draped over one shoulder, and completed the look with a pair of white and yellow daisy earrings.

The story behind Queen Margrethe’s raincoat is perhaps even more interesting than the raincoat itself.
According to The Royal Order of Sartorial Splendour, Queen Margrethe acquired the cheerful looking material at Peter Jones & Partners in London.
She reportedly took the tablecloth-type wax cloth fabric to Danish fashion designer Jørgen Bender who fashioned it into a raincoat – with the Queen’s artistic input, of course.
The famous raincoat is absolutely beloved by Queen Margrethe’s royal fans. In 2022 @Alex_T_Smith tweeted: “It will surprise none of you but I am OBSESSED with Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and the raincoat she made herself from a plastic tablecloth.” His tweet received an enormous 7,767 likes.
@JaysonPendragon commented: “That is fabulous!!” @Bambigoesforth seconded this: “It’s brilliant!”
@tweetlawteacher added: “Amazing! Thanks for sharing. I’m just off to look at plastic tablecloth’s…..” @Steve_Zowietje said: “Category is: Tablecloth Couture @RuPaulsDragRace @RuPaul.”
The late Queen Elizabeth II did not wear anything quite like Queen Margrethe’s yellow raincoat, although she did once step out in a “shocking” multi-coloured gown.
Queen Elizabeth II was famous for her brightly coloured monochromatic outfits, complete with a dress, jacket and hat.
