EVEN though we know we shouldn't do it, sometimes it can be hard to resist squeezing a spot.
But if you're going to start taking matters into your own hands, there are a few things you should know first.
There's a fine line between popping your pimples safely and causing scarring.
Which is why experts say extractions should be left to the professionals to avoid making the situation worse.
However, let's be honest, not all of us can afford to splash out on a dermatologist when we can pop a spot ourselves.
So, it's important to know the best way to tackle pimples without doing more harm than good.
Top tips
Which is why the famous dermatologist Dr Pimple Popper, real name Sandra Lee, has shared her ultimate guide to popping your spots safely
Taking to Instagram, where she shares stomach-churning videos from her clinic, she explained her six steps for "how to pop a pimple".
She said: "As a board certified dermatologist, I am ALWAYS going to tell you to resist the urge to pop your pimples because it can do more harm than good, and make your spots worse and lead to scarring.
"But I am no dummy, and KNOW most of you will not listen to me. "
Wait for a head
Her first piece of advice is to only extract a pimple if it has come to a white or yellow "head".
She says: "If the pimple has a head, at that point it is the easiest to pop, with the least risk of scarring because the bump is very superficial to the surface of the skin."
The next step is to make sure you have washed your hands and face with warm water and cleanser.
Dr Lee says you should then "gently press a warm washcloth against the pimple for a few minutes to soften the contents of pores, allowing an easier extraction process."
Use an extractor
She advises using a comedone extractor – a metal tool with a looped end that can remove blackheads – for the next step.
"Use cotton and alcohol to clean the treatment area and to disinfect your comedone extractor before each use," she says.
"Place the preferred loop over the pimple and apply slow and even pressure to push contents of the pimple out.
"If the pimple is not popping, don’t keep trying to force it because continually pushing and squeezing will only irritate your skin more.
"Once a pimple has been popped, keep the area clean and let it heal properly to avoid scarring."
Keep it clean
To finish, Dr Lee says you should apply a cold, clean washcloth against the area and use a spot treatment that contains salicylic acid.
She explains that this keeps the area clean and safe from bacteria and help with the healing process.
Dr Pimple Popper, whose YouTube channel has a loyal following of more than 5.9 million people, says she started posting her gross videos online as a social experiment but added that her new found fame sometimes freaks her out.
Speaking previously, she said: “I've had people cry when they see me and I just don't see myself as special or a celebrity. It's so weird and still something I have to get used to.”
Among some of her more grisly videos includes one where she removed a HORN that looks like a pork scratching from a woman's head.
In another clip, she removes a woman who was born with a "tail" that kept growing back.
