‘Every fashion has its time’: Inside the wardrobe of designer Annie Bing

How would you describe your style?
A mix of timeless basics with a rock’n’roll touch – a crisp white tee or faded denim – and statement pieces.

There are definitely clothes I wore years ago that I wouldn’t wear today, but I see those as part of learning and finding my own style.

What is the oldest thing in your wardrobe?
A gold necklace with a little bird on it that my grandmother gave me.

And the most recent item you bought?
I recently added a rare vintage Chanel bag to my collection. It’s something I’ll pass on to my daughter.

What would you wear …
… on a first date? I stay true to my uniform for the most part, no matter what I have to do, and I always wear my own line. So, jeans and a tee with a blazer or leather jacket.
… on a plane? I layer, with a chunkier knit or oversized sweatshirt.
… to the Oscars? For a fancy event I always go with a statement suit.

What is the first piece of clothing you remember wearing?
At school all the girls had on this style of denim jeans, and my family didn’t have a lot of extra money. So, I cut up a few pairs I already had to make something similar. They were so special to me because I made them myself.

What was your first fashion moment?
It was as a child at my grandmother’s house in Denmark. I spent so many summers playing dress-up and layering on her vintage jewellery that, for a while when I was younger, I wanted to be a jewellery designer.

Who’s your favourite designer?
Coco Chanel. She really understood women and what they wanted.

Who is your style muse?
My grandmother Elly. Her style was timeless and effortless. She taught me to dress for myself.

Can you think of your worst fashion mistake?
I don’t really look at fashion that way – I think everything has its time. There are definitely clothes
I wore years ago that I wouldn’t wear today, but I see those as part of learning and finding my own style.

What is your favourite fashion decade?
I love classic rock’n’roll style more than anything, so probably the ’60s when the Rolling Stones were first becoming popular. I love the grunge style of the ’80s and ’90s, too.

What are the three essential items in your wardrobe?
A good pair of jeans, a leather jacket that feels lived in, and a boot I can wear with everything.

What shoes do you wear most often?
An ankle boot with a low heel. I can run around in them all day, from meetings to chasing after my kids.

What would you never wear?
I try to avoid shoes with too high a heel. I don’t like to be slowed down!

Is there a trend you like right now?
Power suits. It’s a statement look I have always loved.

Do you have a favourite fragrance?
I wear our Savage Rose Oil every day. It’s my style in a scent. I usually have the candle version burning in the office and at home, too.

What’s your favourite off-duty, casual Sunday look?
I live in jeans and a graphic tee. They’re what I feel most comfortable in and it’s easy when I don’t know what else to wear.
