I’m a nanny to billionaires – the tips are massive and I sometimes have my own butler but can never tell the kids ‘no’ | The Sun

A BRITISH nanny has revealed how she has travelled the world working for billionaire families, and has even been flown by private jet and had her own butler.

Kathryn Lord, 36, from Kew, lifted the lid on what life was really like working for high-profile families, including some of the extravagant gifts she received.

Kathryn started nannying while she was studying at Durham University doing Post Graduate Certificate in Education.

Speaking to Fabulous, Kathryn said: “I signed up to agencies and because of my high level of qualifications, the more experience I got and then the more roles I was put forward for.”

Kathryn, who still nannies part-time now and is the author of More to Organising, said she was soon paired up with some very wealthy families.

She added: “I have worked for lawyers, business owners, investment bankers, and doctors."

And part of the role involved looking after rich kids wherever the family were, be it at home or on holiday.

Kathryn said she got to stay in five-star hotels and swanky private villas around the world, in destinations such as France, Cape Town, Russia, Germany, Mozambique, Italy, Switzerland, Amsterdam and Ibiza.

Two of the most incredible travel experiences she had were going on a luxury safari and spending New Years Eve in the Maldives.

And she often didn’t have to slum it in economy either, adding: “I often got to fly with the family and I have flown both private and first class.

The supernanny said that as well as experiencing a very lavish lifestyle, she also received some very generous gifts from her families.

And this was on top of the "hundreds or thousands" she could be given as a bonus.

Kathryn shared: “For one birthday, a family let me stay in their New York Penthouse with a friend and gave me front row tickets on Broadway.

“Many families paid for massages.”

She also received a designer Burberry handbag from one family at Christmas.

While some people would consider it to be a luxury to have just an employed nanny, Kathryn said the families often had full teams of staff running their households.

She continued: “They also often had multiple nannies, as well as myself.

“And on top of this, they employed private chefs who would be on call 24/7 and housekeepers.

“One of the families had a bodyguard.

“He would wait in the car or stand outside the door when we went to eat or clubs like karate.

“When we walked through the park or went to the zoo, he would always be close by.”

Kathryn said one family had their own butler, and she admitted she found it “weird” to be waited on by them.

She added: "I found it quite uncomfortable as I would try to get a drink for the children and I was asked to sit down."

When it came to looking after wealthy kids, no expense was spared by the parents.

Kathryn said one family that she worked for gave her a credit card that she called the “nanny card”, which was specifically for spending on the child.

And the family told her she “couldn’t say no” to the youngster’s requests as money wasn’t an object for them.

Kathryn said that she didn’t let the child have everything they demanded, and she was strict with them having good manners.

She added: “I think the way that I am with children means they are not spoiled or bratty.

“I teach them to use their manners and I am so passionate about helping children to be independent, capable adults.

"I never used a naughty spot, however, I did provide a safe, calming, loving space for when they got overwhelmed."

They employed private chefs who would be on call 24/7 and housekeepers.

As well as providing her with a “nanny card”, one family gave Kathryn her own car.

The child expert added: “I was given an Audi to use with the children, and in other countries, a car was provided for me on my time off.”

One of her first jobs was working as a “travel nanny” on a cruise ship, where she looked after a wealthy Sri Lankan family during their two-week holiday.

She said: “The kids rarely spent time with the parents except for the daily photograph just before dinner.

“One of the highlights though was when the dad invited fifty of his closest friends and family.

“We had a gorgeous meal of traditional Russian food, and the father came in with bags and bags of McDonalds and they ate it at the table.

" I was quite embarrassed on behalf of the restaurant staff and chefs."
