IT was recently revealed that women can enjoy orgasms up to four seconds longer if they use a sex toy.
But with the prices of the best sex gadgets racking up – it seems some ladies have turned to a rather worrying DIY method instead.
Over the last few days, stories have been circulating the internet about women using their electric toothbrushes to masturbate.
And it seems as though they could have even been inspired by a recent episode in TV show Orange Is The New Black – which sees one character get herself off with a toothbrush.
However, experts are now urging women not to pleasure themselves down below and to instead stick to conventional sex toys.
In particular, consultant gynaecologist Anne Henderson revealed that using an electric toothbrush in your lady area could cause severe damage.
The structure and shape of the toothbrush, regardless of which part is used, could potentially injure, lacerate or cause trauma to the delicate vulval area
She told The Sun Online: "This interesting new trend, as with many similar developments, can potentially be very harmful.
"I would have serious concerns about anyone using an electric toothbrush for anything other than cleaning their teeth.
"The structure and shape of the toothbrush, regardless of which part is used, could potentially injure, lacerate or cause trauma to the delicate vulval area, particularly the clitoris, especially if one of the more aggressive cleaning heads is used.
"The actual toothbrush barrel is also the wrong shape for using intimately and could cause similar injuries.
"There is also the issue of hygiene and how to adequately clean the toothbrush.
"The whole issue is fraught with potential complications and should be avoided at all costs."
How to prevent yeast infections
If you do think that you have a yeast infection, the best thing to do is go to your pharmacist or a GUM clinic.
They can help work out if you really do have something like thrush and which medications might work most effectively.
You'll often need antifungal medicine to get rid of thrush.
This can be a tablet you take, a tablet you insert into your vagina or a cream to relieve the irritation.
It should clear up within a week or after you've finished your course of meds.
It's harder to get rid of an infection once you have it but there are various things you can do to prevent one in the first place:
- Only have sex when you're aroused. Having intercourse when your vagina is dry can cause irritation and in turn, trigger an infection
- Never douche or use "feminine hygiene" products – your vagina cleans itself
- Avoid strong soaps and body washes
- Avoid tight and synthetic underwear
- Try sleeping in the buff to give your vagina a little breathing space
It's not the first time women have been warned against putting foreign objects near their vagina.
Earlier this year, it was revealed women have been using cider vinegar, which is used in salad dressings and chutneys, in the hopes that it will tighten up their vagina.
Supporters of the method say it will not only make the vagina tighter but also shrinks the vulva – noting that it is something that women have been doing since The Dark Ages.
Unsurprisingly, however, it's a terrible idea and has prompted experts to warn women not to put vinegar anywhere near their genitals.
Similarly, the most recent vaginal trend is glitter – with women all over the country glitter-bombing their bits to make them feel "soft, sweet and magical".
And once again this has sparked warnings from experts with Doctor Vanessa Mackay, spokesperson for the Royal College of Obstetricians and Gynaecologists (RCOG) saying it could trigger "bacterial vaginosis or thrush, and inflammation".
As modern science tells us the vagina is a delicate, self-cleaning machine that generally does fine if it's left alone – so make sure you do.
