Fashion and beauty expert Trinny Woodall has been helping women dress and feel confident for decades. In a recent Instagram video, Trinny revealed how purple is the one colour everybody can wear, no matter size, skin or hair colour, and she shared her top style tips for creating an all-purple outfit.
Trinny explained: “Purple is a colour that suits everybody, and it’s a colour that will lift a face up.”
Before getting dressed, Trinny applied her makeup: “I’m going to do minimal makeup and show you how I’m going to do a purple outfit from my head to my toes.”
The makeover expert chose a purple jumper, purple wide-leg trousers and purple socks all in different tones of purple; the jumper was a bright purple, the trousers were lilac and the socks were a deep purple.
She completed the look with a pair of white trainers and added: “Now I’m thinking I need some silver accessories,” which she got in the form of a skinny belt and a chunky bangle.

In keeping with the spring weather, Trinny finished the outfit with a purple cord long-line jacket, which she said was in fact a men’s jacket. She also added a bold silver cross-body bag, and brighter purple soft scarf and a pair of silver sunglasses.
Trinny concluded: “Sometimes you’ve just got to wear colours that bring you ultimate joy!”
For anyone not feeling brave enough to wear head-to-toe purple, Trinny explained her “philosophy”. She said: “Everyone can wear every colour – you just have to choose the right shade for you.”
Anyone who thinks “I can’t wear yellow” should reconsider according to Trinny, because “there’s a whole spectrum – from neon to mustard – to pick from” and the style guru said, “you just need to find your yellow”.

Colours fall into three categories; cool, mid-toned and warm. For example, white is cool, ecru is mid-tone and cream is warm. Neon yellow is cool, lemon is mid-tone and mustard is warm.
Finding the colours that suit you the most comes after identifying your skin undertone, Trinny revealed.
Cool skin undertones are connected to pink or blue – Trinny says most people have blue, green or grey eyes.
Warm skin undertones are associated with peach, caramel and yellow. Hair can be tawny blonde, red or brown with coppery tones, and eyes are usually hazel, green or brown.
Mid-tone skin undertones, or neutral are if your colouring fits in the middle, with a mix of warm and cool tones. Some might have cool skin and eyes but warm hair, or vice versa. Trinny is neutral herself.
There’s also a quick test you can do to find out what skin undertone you might have, and it’s all about how black looks on you.
Trinny said: “If you can wear black with no make-up you’re a cool who suits cold, bright shades. If you look tired in black and need to wear make-up, you’re a neutral who suits mid-tones. If black drains you no matter what make-up you wear, you’re a warm and suit autumnal colours.”
After identifying what colours suit your skin undertone the most, Trinny said you should “tear up the rule book” when it comes to fashion.
For example, anyone who thinks blue and green clash, should reconsider – “they look great if you pick the right shades”, Trinny argued.
Pink and red Trinny “loves together” but there is one colour combo exception – red and green – because Trinny said, “they fight each other and are too Christmassy”.
Trinny also suggested letting go of any bias toward certain colours, for example, if olive green reminds you of your school uniform.
If you’re warm-toned, olive “could be one of your best colours”, so Trinny said to “ignore those associations from childhood and embrace shades that suit you”.
If you’re ready to start experimenting with colours, Trinny suggests investing in a clothes rail and curating three outfits for the next few days. Start with a colour you know you already like and have in your wardrobe and hang everything in that colour together on the rail.
Assess the pieces – jackets, trousers, dresses, jumpers, skirts etc – and Trinny said “you might discover some new relationships” – the shirt matches the trousers for example.
This can also be done for contrasting outfits; “play around and create three coloured outfits” – some that are tonal and some that clash.
Hang these outfits with accessories and shoes for a complete look and “for the next three days, that’s what you’re going to wear”.
Trinny told The Daily Mail you might “have a wobble” when you go to put the outfit on, but “challenge yourself and stick to your guns and wear it”.
She concluded: “I guarantee it will bring some joy to your day.”
Once you’ve sorted your wardrobe, consider giving your hair a make over with these flattering cuts that suit women over 50 according to a hairdresser.
