We were roasted over our ugly privacy fence – we know it wasn’t the best way to do it but it saved our pets | The Sun

A COUPLE has documented their DIY project that ensured their pets were safe and that their family had more privacy.

As we move into the summer months, more and more people will be desperate for some privacy while enjoying the sunshine.

This is the case for one family who ordered a pool for their yard and then wanted to construct a privacy fence.

TikTok page @dontdrinkanddiy documents the couple's backyard makeover.

The family's property came with a small chain link fence around the perimeter which gave them little to no privacy.

After the pool was installed, the couple constructed a tall wooden fence along the chain link fence around their yard.

In one update video, they showed the back of the fence with the smaller fence behind it and planted some trees in a bid to make it less of an eye-sore.

"Home Depot had their arborvitae on sale this week, so I grabbed three to start making this side less ugly," the text in the video said.

Following some backlash and "roasting" on the fence installation, the couple made another video explaining their choices.

They explained: "The cost for this and a 10ft section we still have to finish by the neighbor's shed, was about $1500.

"We know this wasn’t the best way of doing this, but we needed something we could afford and that was relatively quick and easy to put up."

Others questioned why the couple left the chain link fence up.

"We didn't take out the chain link for a few reasons. We wanted to keep it intact for pet security," they said.

The TikTokers added that "digging is a nightmare with how many roots there are, and neither of us felt like digging up the posts."

Despite previous negative comments, other viewers praised the DIY enthusiasts.

"Very smart with the double fencing for animals," one said.

Another added: "Keep doing u. It doesn’t matter if it looks pretty as long as it keeps the pets safe and can’t escape."

The couple shared that they have a "fat cat" who can be seen in one video trying to go under the new wooden fence.

Another viewer said: "I think keeping the chain link works. Totally makes more sense with pets."

Meanwhile, others noted that another benefit to keeping the original fence is that there can be no arguments about breaching the property line as it is still clearly marked.
